Federal and local authorities launched a major crackdown called Operation Free MacArthur Park aimed at the open-air drug market in MacArthur Park, resulting in scores of arrests and a large fentanyl seizure. The effort involved hundreds of agents from multiple agencies, targeted alleged suppliers and street-level dealers, and drew public attention after officials shared footage and statements. The operation also reignited the political fight over how cities handle public safety and drug enforcement.

Officials announced the operation under the name Operation Free MacArthur Park and released details on social media, with critics and supporters reacting fast. Details of “Operation Free MacArthur Park” were on social media by Bill Essayli, the first assistant United States attorney for the Central District of California. “We are going after street dealers and suppliers of massive amounts of fentanyl and methamphetamine,” he wrote. “Over the last 24 hours, federal and local law enforcement have started arresting 25 defendants charged in a federal criminal complaint with possessing and distributing dangerous narcotics, including fentanyl and methamphetamine.”

Investigators say the early results were significant, with large quantities of deadly drugs removed from the streets. At least 19 kilograms of fentanyl and 17 arrests were initially reported in the operation targeting the ‘notorious open-air drug market.’ Prosecutors say a top trafficker from Calabasas is already in federal custody and faces life in prison if convicted, while other defendants could face decades behind bars.

Video released by law enforcement shows a heavy, coordinated presence, underscoring the scale of the effort to dismantle supplier networks feeding the park market. More than 300 agents of the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Department of Justice, and the Los Angeles Police Dept. were included, to a Fox News report. The footage emphasizes the scope and planning behind the takedown and why federal partners prioritized the case.

The Los Angeles Police Department issued its own statement to clarify its role and the focus of the operation. “The LAPD is currently assisting our federal partners in a joint narcotics enforcement operation in the MacArthur Park Area. This operation is focused solely on drug‑related criminal activity,” a statement from the LAPD on social media. “There is no connection to immigration enforcement,” it added, aiming to head off misinformation while confirming local cooperation.

On-the-ground videos widely circulated online show suspects being detained and officers carrying out arrests in public spaces. A video from the California Post many of the suspects being arrested or detained. The raw visuals made the point that federal raids can be messy and dramatic, but officials argue they are necessary to stop trafficking and save lives.

Law enforcement spokespeople framed the crackdown as a direct response to policies that allowed open-air markets to expand and poison neighborhoods. “We are attacking the open-air drug market that’s been allowed to proliferate under California policies for too long. You go down there, and there’s people actively selling fentanyl, methamphetamine. There’s people using in the open,” Essalyi said in an on the scene. “To the drug dealers poisoning the streets of Los Angeles: your safe haven is gone,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche .

Officials also said part of the planning included community cleanup ahead of major international events, an effort meant to restore safety and order before large crowds arrive. Federal authorities stressed removing dangerous substances and breaking distribution chains as an urgent public-safety priority. The operation and the way it unfolded put a spotlight on the tensions between federal enforcement and local politics over how to protect neighborhoods.

The raid revived past clashes with city leadership, including a sharp response from Los Angeles’s mayor during a prior federal action at the park. “This is footage from today in MacArthur Park. Minutes before, there were more than 20 kids playing — then, the MILITARY comes through,” she wrote on social media at the time. “The SECOND I heard about this, I went to the park to speak to the person in charge to tell them it needed to end NOW. Absolutely outrageous.” Federal officials later denied she had shut down the operation and emphasized that enforcement continued despite political pushback.
