Cycling Missionaries Raise Funds For Pregnancy Centers

Biking for Babies turns a grueling summer ride into a pro-life fundraiser, with young adults cycling hundreds of miles to support pregnancy resource centers and the women who rely on them. The effort mixes endurance, prayer, and public witness, and it has grown into a yearly event that ties physical sacrifice to a cause aimed at helping mothers choose life.

The group’s riders, called missionaries, commit to a six-day journey that covers about 600 miles across parts of the Midwest and Northeast. They usually average around 120 miles a day, keeping a steady pace while also praying, speaking about the mission, and meeting people along the route.

What makes the ride unusual is that it is not just about hauling bikes down the road. These young adults, ages 18 to 39, are also trained in pro-life formation and spiritual discipline, so the trip is meant to shape them as much as it raises money for the centers they support.

Pregnancy resource centers sit at the heart of the project because they provide direct help to mothers who may feel scared, isolated, or overwhelmed. Many offer ultrasounds, counseling, diapers, clothing, and parenting classes, giving women real support instead of the pressure and loneliness that often surround an abortion decision.

That practical aid is paired with a broader message about hope. Supporters of the mission say PRCs can make a difference when women see both the baby on an ultrasound and a community ready to walk with them through the months ahead.

Money from the ride also helps fund the formation of the missionaries themselves. According to the organization, participants learn through virtual small groups and educational and spiritual curriculum, so the fundraising effort doubles as a formation pipeline for future pro-life advocates.

Along the way, the riders connect with pregnancy centers and tell their stories to people they meet across the country. They pray for the centers during training and while on the road, and that steady rhythm of prayer and outreach is part of what gives the mission its identity.

Over the years, the numbers have stacked up in a big way. In 16 years, Biking for Babies has donated $2.48 million to pro-life work and supported 175 pregnancy centers, a record that shows the ride has become more than a symbolic gesture.

The founders started the effort in 2009 after seeing a need for a more hands-on way for young people to live out their beliefs. They were students at the University of Illinois-Champaign at the time, and the idea grew from a desire to turn conviction into something visible, demanding, and useful.

One of this year’s riders, Father Matthew Harrison of the Diocese of Charlotte, said the hard miles can send a powerful message to mothers who feel trapped or alone. He said the goal is to show them that “there are people and communities ready and willing to help them along their own journeys.”

That kind of witness fits the larger culture fight around abortion, where advocates for life argue that changing minds starts with changing the atmosphere around motherhood. Instead of treating pregnancy as a crisis to manage, the mission tries to present it as a life worth protecting and a future worth embracing.

Father Harrison also said many women considering abortion first find themselves in “a place of isolation,” weighed down by hopelessness, shame, or confusion. His view is that a healthier culture would help mothers see “the joy and beauty of the new life with which they have been entrusted,” and the ride is built to push that message into the open in a very physical way.

For the riders, the road itself becomes part of the testimony. The long days, the sweat, the prayer, and the constant motion all reinforce the same point: support for mothers is not abstract, and the people behind the mission are willing to put in real work to prove it.
