Trump Orders Decisive Action Against Iran, Protects America

President Donald Trump launched Operation Epic Fury on Feb. 28 alongside Israeli partners, a campaign framed to end Iran’s ability to threaten the U.S. and its allies. Experts and advisers argue this is more than punishment; it is a strategic push to reshape the Middle East, squeeze hostile networks, and free American focus for greater threats. The debate is fierce, but the administration is clear: the goal is to remove Iran’s capacity to threaten and to force a new balance on terms the United States sets.

President Donald Trump announced in an early morning on Feb. 28 that U.S. and Israeli forces had launched major combat operations against Iran under Operation Epic Fury. The operation was presented as surgical, decisive, and aimed at core capabilities rather than aimless escalation. Supporters say this is classic peace through strength—the kind of posture that deters future enemies.

Security voices see Epic Fury as a step beyond last summer’s Operation Midnight Hammer, which targeted nuclear sites and damaged Tehran’s program. Critics warned that strikes alone would only buy time, but the administration insists Epic Fury has a broader, integrated aim. Officials say the mission includes striking Iran’s navy, stopping the manufacture and use of IEDs, disrupting terrorist networks, and denying a nuclear breakout.

Those objectives reflect a strategy laid out by Trump allies inside the national security team, who argue the fight is not just about Iran but about America’s global posture. “For over a decade now, President Trump has made resonant an immense frustration with the tendency of most American presidents to let conflicts and hostilities simmer in ways that destabilize entire regions and harm American interests,” William Thibeau, director of the American Military Project at The Claremont Institute, told the Caller. Thibeau and others say a hard reset in the Middle East will let the U.S. reallocate forces where they expect the next big contest.

Experts warn the campaign could mean tough, near-term escalation intended to produce a longer-term peace. “This means near-term escalation in the hope of a more permanent peace and a genuine pivot to other regions much closer to the thesis of the Administration’s National Security and National Defense Strategies,” he added. That logic drives the decision to press Iran now rather than let threats quietly regrow.

Analysts point out that Midnight Hammer knocked back nuclear infrastructure but did not erase Iran’s intent to rebuild its program. “Midnight Hammer was framed behind taking Iran’s nuclear capability out … [Operation Epic Fury] was more a holistic reason,” Olidort told the Caller. He warned that removing capability is different from removing intent; Epic Fury aims to do both where possible.

Olidort pressed that earlier strikes did not change Tehran’s willingness to rebuild and to act against American interests. “The important point is that [Midnight Hammer] did not remove Iran’s intention to rebuild … those threats persisted,” he added. “[Iran] was looking to act in ways that would threaten the American people.” That concern shaped the planning for a broader campaign this winter.

Others close to the strategy argue the operation speaks to Trump’s larger goal of ending conflicts, not perpetuating them. “When the Islamic Republic murdered 30,000 of their own people in the course of a few weeks, that really struck a chord,” Doran told the Caller, noting Trump’s commitment to enforcing past threats and ending the regime definitively. Doran insists decisive action now can prevent future cycles of chaos and reduce long-term costs for America.

That same logic underpins the claim the campaign will have wider geopolitical effects, especially on China and Russia. “By going directly at the clerics in Iran, we are seeing the birth pangs of a more peaceful Middle East that alone will allow the United States to reallocate massive military and financial resources out of the Middle East and elsewhere in the world where they are needed, most notably in Asia,” Doran told the Caller. Officials say shrinking Iran’s reach could complicate supply lines that benefit rivals.

Thibeau highlighted economic leverage as part of the calculation and flagged energy ties that matter to Beijing. “China relies on Iran for anywhere from 10-20% of their domestic energy supply, so it is not insignificant to alter their access to such oil. Broadly, any future confrontation with China in the Pacific, as many think could happen, will require focus and prioritization of resources and organizational bandwidth,” Thibeau told the Caller. He added that removing distractions in the Middle East is a prerequisite for a credible pivot to other theaters.

Policymakers also see a secondary strategic benefit aimed at isolating Moscow and depriving adversaries of support. “I can sum it up in one word: oil,” Doran told the Caller. “It’s going to lose a third [supplier] in Iran if this operation is successful, and that will leave Vladimir Putin feeling very lonely and isolated, which is precisely where the president must put him if he is going to exert maximum diplomatic pressure to end the war in Ukraine and resolve the one conflict that he truly, deeply desires to end, and that is the fighting between Moscow and Kyiv,” Doran told the Caller.

Questions remain about timing and risk, and critics worry about escalation and American entanglement. Trump supporters who once emphasized restraint now hear a different message: sometimes the best way to avoid endless war is to finish a fight cleanly and decisively. That argument will dominate debates in coming weeks as the operation unfolds and consequences become clearer.
