Therapy Debate Grows As Adult Children Cut Off Parents

Family estrangement is getting harder to ignore, and adult children cutting ties with parents has become a painful part of that conversation. Some experts say therapy is helping people set boundaries, while others argue it is nudging them toward a culture of total cutoff. The debate sits right at the intersection of mental health, family loyalty, and a growing fear that too many relationships are ending instead of being repaired.

Recent polling suggests the problem reaches deep into American homes. A 2025 YouGov survey found that nearly four in 10 Americans are estranged from at least one close family member, with many reporting distance from a sibling, parent, or child. That kind of number explains why the subject keeps landing in the middle of online arguments, clinic conversations, and kitchen-table blowups.

Supporters of therapy say it can give people language for pain they may have carried for years. But critics warn that some therapists may lean too quickly toward validating one side, especially when the conflict is messy and layered. That has fueled talk about “cutoff culture,” a phrase used by those who believe advice meant to protect people sometimes pushes them to sever ties too fast.

Richard Blake, a Texas-based psychology researcher focused on anxiety and family estrangement, sees the trend as an overreaction in modern life. He points to survey data showing that among more than 5,200 parents estranged from adult children, 1,014 said their children had started therapy within the year before the break. He also notes that 515 parents said therapy was mentioned as part of the reason for the split, though those surveys were not peer-reviewed and relied on parents’ reports.

Blake argues that the issue is not simple, and that’s exactly why so many families get stuck. In some cases, the conflict centers on values rather than obvious abuse, with politics, religion, and personal beliefs all turning into flashpoints. What one person sees as a tough but fair disagreement, another may experience as disrespect, invalidation, or emotional harm.

That gray area is where things get slippery. Blake says the term “emotional abuse” can be stretched too far in therapy settings and online spaces, especially when people are sorting through arguments over identity, language, or moral beliefs. At the same time, he acknowledges that some estrangements are absolutely justified, especially when there is physical or sexual abuse in the picture.

Laura Wellington, a Connecticut mother estranged from her adult daughter since 2024, believes therapists can sometimes make family problems feel more one-sided than they really are. Known online as “Doormat Mom,” she says she has seen therapy language raise the bar for what counts as good enough parenting. In her view, that can turn a complicated family story into a simple blame game.

Wellington does not dismiss therapy outright, and she is careful to separate helpful professionals from those who may be missing the full picture. She says some parents are encouraged to apologize, which can be the right move when there is real wrongdoing. Still, she believes therapists should look at the entire relationship, not just the loudest complaint in the room.

For Blake, the biggest problem is how quickly some families stop talking. He says adult children often describe feeling unheard for years, while parents say the final cutoff arrives without warning, sometimes through a letter or a sudden message telling them never to contact their child again. In those cases, the damage is not just emotional; it can also shut down any chance for a real back-and-forth.

That is why Blake keeps coming back to listening as the most basic fix. He recommends giving the other person room to speak, repeating back what was heard, and resisting the urge to jump straight into defense mode. Those may sound like small moves, but in a strained relationship, they can be the difference between a conversation and another slammed door.

Not every expert views estrangement through the same lens. Lucy Blake, a developmental psychologist in the U.K., has said therapy can be very helpful when the therapist understands estrangement and recognizes that it affects more than just one relationship. She also notes that therapy tends to work better when it accounts for the grief, loss, and broader family fallout that can come with a cutoff.

Even so, the people living through these fractures keep running into the same hard truth. Relief can come from cutting contact, but relief is not the same thing as resolution. The bigger task is figuring out when distance is protective, when it is impulsive, and when a family still has enough common ground left to stay in the room a little longer.
