The Secret Service has faced widespread criticism for its failure to prevent a gunman from attacking former President Donald Trump and killing one of his supporters.
In addition, shocking revelations have emerged regarding the agency’s failure to detect a deadly plot on January 6, 2021.
According to a report from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG), then-Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris was dangerously close to a “viable” pipe bomb that had been placed in a bush outside the Democratic National Committee (DNC) building in Washington, D.C.
The report detailed how the Secret Service site agent had canine units conduct sweeps of the building on January 6 but failed to include an exterior sweep that would have covered the area where the bomb was placed.
The oversight was attributed to the absence of a site coordinator who could have directed the canine units where to search, as well as the lack of an explosives team on site to support them. This led to missed opportunities in detecting and preventing potential threats.
As per National Review, these findings raise serious concerns about the Secret Service’s security protocols and their ability to safeguard high-profile individuals and events.
“Two USCP plainclothes agents who were searching the DNC building after a similar device was discovered at the Republican National Committee building ultimately discovered the pipe bomb 1 hour and 40 minutes after the Vice President-elect’s arrival,” the report read.
“The two USCP agents notified the Secret Service, who then evacuated the Vice President-elect from the DNC building,” it added.
Along with placing a bomb at the DNC’s headquarters, another pipe bomb was also deposited outside the Republican National Committee’s building.

The recent revelations about the Secret Service’s failure to prevent potential threats against high-profile individuals and events are deeply concerning.
The report from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General has shed light on critical oversights in security protocols that led to missed opportunities in detecting and preventing dangerous situations.
The absence of a site coordinator and explosives team on-site, as well as the failure to conduct an exterior sweep where a viable pipe bomb was placed, highlight significant gaps in the Secret Service’s ability to safeguard key figures like then-Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris and other individuals attending important events.
