Paxton Clinches Senate Win Over Cornyn In Texas Runoff

Ken Paxton toppled a Washington staple in a Texas Senate runoff, beating four-term Sen. John Cornyn by a decisive margin despite being outspent by a wide margin. The race turned into a clear fight between the establishment and a fighter backed by former President Trump, and Paxton now moves on to face a Democrat whose record and rhetoric will be central in the fall matchup.

The runoff settled what the March ballot could not, producing a winner with momentum and a clear mandate from the GOP base. Though Cornyn confidently Paxton that “Judgment day is coming,” Paxton ultimately proved victorious in Tuesday’s runoff election, winning by double digits and handing the establishment a stinging defeat. Voters rewarded a candidate who leaned hard into border, second amendment, and pro-Trump messages.

By the time networks projected the outcome, partial returns showed Paxton leading by a large margin with close to half the vote counted. The math told a simple story: Paxton energized turnout where it mattered and Cornyn’s decades in Washington could not paper over the dissatisfaction many Republicans felt. That discontent overwhelmed the flood of ad dollars the senator and his allied groups pumped into the race.

Cornyn’s campaign shelled out more than $24 million on advertising, and allied super PACs spent tens of millions more trying to prop up the incumbent. One prominent pro-Cornyn group poured nearly $33 million into the fight overall, including about $9.5 million aimed solely at the runoff. By contrast, Paxton’s operation spent roughly $4.8 million on ads and leaned on a message that connected with voters frustrated with career politicians.

Paxton used every forum to attack Cornyn’s record, painting the senator as part of the Washington class that betrays conservative priorities. In his closing argument he charged Cornyn with “siding with Joe Biden on restricting Second Amendment rights, siding with Joe Biden on bringing Afghan refugees here without vetting them, going against Donald Trump on the border, going against Donald Trump’s re-election, going against Donald Trump’s first election, fighting for amnesty, open borders — that’s John Cornyn.” Those lines landed with a base worried about the border and national security.

Cornyn’s team tried to sell stability and experience, arguing the senator’s long tenure made him the safer choice. They even sought to paint Paxton as “morally bankrupt” and a “mortal threat to the America First agenda,” a framing meant to scare wary conservatives. It didn’t stick, because voters were more interested in who would fight for them than who fit Washington’s mold.

President Trump threw his weight behind Paxton, calling him “a true MAGA Warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate.” While signaling goodwill to Cornyn by referring to him as a “good man,” Trump emphasized that Paxton is a fighter and that “Our Country needs Fighters, and also Loyalty to the Cause of Greatness.” That endorsement mattered in a primary where loyalty and grit carry as much weight as policy promises.

Trump celebrated the victory publicly and quickly highlighted the endorsement in social posts, underscoring how pivotal his backing was for Paxton’s momentum. The win also sends a message to the GOP bench nationwide: the base rewards those who align with Trump and push an uncompromising conservative agenda. Expect the campaign to keep claiming that message loudly as the general election approaches.

On the Democratic side, Paxton will face state Rep. James Talarico, whose record will serve as a stark contrast to Paxton’s. Talarico has drawn attention for his positions on social issues and for earlier controversies that Republicans will spotlight, including attempts to use Scripture in political arguments and votes tied to transgender healthcare for minors. Those items will frame much of the fall debate about values, parental rights, and public policy.

The matchup sets clear lines for November: Paxton will run as the fighter who took down an entrenched establishment figure and who has Trump’s backing, while his opponent will be presented as out of step with conservative values. Campaigns nationally will watch Texas closely to see if the energy behind Paxton can survive a general election climate that will test turnout and messaging across the state.

The Lone Star showdown is now a full-time contest, and both sides will pivot immediately from the primary dust-up into a high-stakes general election fight.
