The 2025 NFL Draft has been buzzing with chatter about Shedeur Sanders, the quarterback from Colorado who unexpectedly fell to the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has had quite a reaction to this turn of events. Kiper spent a lot of his airtime expressing frustration with the NFL and its decision-makers for not picking Sanders earlier in the draft. His intense focus on Sanders became a hot topic on social media.

The long wait for Sanders ended when the Cleveland Browns finally picked him, but Kiper’s discontent lingered. In a lively segment, Rece Davis voiced a sentiment shared by many, indicating that simply yelling at the NFL wouldn’t change the situation. Kiper, however, continued to voice his displeasure. He cited examples like Boomer Esiason and Tom Brady, who also experienced draft day surprises but went on to have successful careers.

Davis acknowledged that sometimes later-round picks do become stars. Kiper, however, launched into a tirade about the NFL’s history of quarterback evaluations, declaring them to be clueless in this area. He argued that the league often misses the mark when judging quarterback talent and went on to praise Sanders’ abilities. Kiper also dismissed concerns about Deion Sanders’ influence on his son’s career.

His strong opinions reveal Kiper’s admiration for Sanders’ potential as a quarterback. While Kiper’s points about the NFL’s evaluation track record have some merit, it’s also true that not every low pick becomes a star, and not every top pick is a bust. This draft once again highlights the unpredictable nature of quarterback success in the league. Finding the ideal match between a player and a coach seems increasingly crucial.

Take Sam Darnold, for example, who was initially seen as a disappointment. But after joining a well-suited coaching environment in Minnesota, he flourished, earning a standout season and a lucrative contract with the Seahawks. Jayden Daniels thrived in Washington, while Caleb Williams faced challenges in Chicago. It’s clear that determining a quarterback’s future success is far from straightforward.

Shedeur Sanders might have had the talent to warrant a higher draft position, but various factors contributed to his slide to the fifth round. The intricacies of player evaluations and draft decisions make predicting outcomes tricky. Yet, Mel Kiper Jr.’s unwavering belief in Sanders showcases the passionate debates that the NFL Draft often stirs up.
