Judge Ordered To Undergo Psychiatric Exam After Racist Remarks

The controversy around a federal judge’s courtroom conduct has now spilled into a formal misconduct fight, with a psychiatric examination ordered as the response to remarks that set off alarms inside the judiciary. At the center of it is a heated exchange with a Latino attorney, a blunt accusation of racial posturing, and a growing dispute over whether the judge crossed a line that no courtroom should normalize.

During an April hearing, the judge lashed out at attorney Ezra Young in language that quickly drew scrutiny. She accused him of acting like a “White savior” and suggested he was trying to rescue Black attorneys in Texas from New York, while also hammering on his appearance and race in a way that turned the session into something far bigger than the case itself.

According to the transcript, the judge repeatedly referenced Young as “White presenting” and “fair-skinned,” even after being told he is Latino. She also told him he looked like a White man and claimed he was intimidated by “Black excellence” because of his “White mediocrity,” then told him, “You should write that down.”

The exchange did not stop there. She also called Young a “Chad,” which she described as the male version of “Karen,” using the term to suggest someone who complains to authority when they do not get their way. That kind of courtroom banter may be trendy in online culture, but in a federal hearing it landed as something much uglier and much more reckless.

Brown also took aim at Young after reading a news article tied to his brief and another professor’s comparison of treatment in a separate tenure dispute to a “lynching.” She said the reporting was sensationalized and overly racialized, then folded that into a pointed attack on Young’s motives and public image.

By the time she framed him as “Mr. Social Media, Main Character Chad, White Hero, Savior, Loves to Help Black People Be An Ally,” the hearing had drifted far from ordinary judicial restraint. The transcript reads like a courtroom boiling over with personal resentment, and that is exactly the kind of atmosphere that tends to spark disciplinary attention.

The fallout has been real. The Fifth Circuit Judicial Council temporarily removed Brown from her docket after Young filed a complaint, and the latest step pushes the matter into even more serious territory. A psychiatric examination is not a routine move, which makes the decision a sign that officials saw enough cause to dig deeper.

Brown has not backed away from her conduct. In a July 28 filing responding to Young’s complaint, she said, “I do not believe my demeanor was inappropriate at any time, especially during the candid conversations about race,” and added that she wanted the chief judge to consider her candor and willingness to be mentored by senior judges.

She also wrote, “I realize the importance of public confidence in the judiciary and take to heart my role in fostering the public’s faith in it.” That statement stands in sharp contrast to the tone captured in the transcript, where the line between candor and contempt seemed to disappear fast.

The judge at the center of the uproar was appointed by President Donald Trump in March 2019 and was the first Black woman to serve on that federal court in Texas. Her background makes the episode even more striking, because the controversy is not about politics at the edges, but about what happens when a judge turns a hearing into a personal spectacle.
