Ron Johnson is pressing hard on newly surfaced Fauci texts that raise fresh questions about what was said behind closed doors versus what the public heard. The messages point to concerns about vaccines, pregnancy, and miscarriage, and the senator says the latest batch is only the beginning.
Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, described the texts as a disturbing glimpse into how public health messaging was handled during the pandemic. He argued that Fauci appeared to speak one way in private while selling a different story to Americans who were being told to trust the official guidance.
The first set of messages came from Fauci’s old government phone, now in the hands of Senate investigators. Johnson said the exchange matters because it suggests federal health leaders were aware of potential risks while the public message stayed far more confident and far less cautious.
In the text exchange from January 2021, Fauci wrote that he had looked into a concern involving mRNA shots and pregnancy. He said, “I asked around a bit more and another issue came up that you need to be aware of. Since many people have significant cytokines storm and fever after the 2nd dose, this theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.”
That line hit like a hammer for Johnson, who blasted the idea that pregnant women were pushed toward what he called an experimental treatment while private doubts were floating around in the background. He said it was wrong to pressure women into taking that risk without a fuller and more honest conversation.
The senator also pointed to the broader pattern surrounding the text messages, saying the newly released material could reveal how much more was kept out of sight. He said the public deserves to know whether officials were filtering information, massaging the facts, or simply ignoring warning signs that did not fit the narrative.
The messages were exchanged among Fauci, then CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, and Vivek Murthy, who later became surgeon general. Johnson said those conversations matter because they involve the people at the center of the federal COVID response, not random side players.
Johnson and Sen. Rand Paul obtained Fauci’s phone from his time leading the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as part of a wider investigation. That probe has also been unfolding alongside efforts tied to contempt proceedings after Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment.
Johnson said the texts show why the device matters so much. In his view, the records offer a rare chance to compare the private doubts of top officials with the upbeat public line that Americans were expected to accept without question.
He also leaned on a 2021 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, saying it included 827 pregnancies exposed to mRNA vaccines and reported 104 spontaneous abortions. Johnson argued that the numbers were presented in a way that softened the real picture, especially for women vaccinated early in pregnancy.
According to Johnson, the timing mattered more than the headline number. He said most of the participants were vaccinated in the third trimester, while the miscarriages clustered among the smaller group of women vaccinated in the first or second trimester.
That statistical fight is at the center of his outrage. Johnson said the data were being framed in a way that could mislead the public, especially when the stakes involved pregnancy, informed consent, and trust in medical guidance.
For Johnson, the issue is bigger than one message or one study. He said the investigation is still unfolding, but the first round of texts already points to a deeper problem with how federal health officials communicated during one of the most sensitive moments of the pandemic.
He said more messages are likely to emerge, and he intends to keep digging as long as the paper trail allows it. With Senate investigators now holding Fauci’s phone, the pressure around those private exchanges is only getting louder.
