Cutting back on sugar before birth and in the first years of life may do more than shape childhood taste buds. New research suggests those early habits could echo for decades, with lower sugar exposure tied to a reduced chance of dementia later on.
The study, published in Neurology, looked at more than 64,000 people in the United Kingdom and compared those born before and after World War II sugar rationing ended in 1953. People who had less sugar exposure before birth and during infancy showed a lower dementia risk than those born after sugar became more available again.
The numbers were pretty striking. Those with limited sugar intake during pregnancy and through the first year of life had a 21% lower risk, while people whose low-sugar exposure stretched to age two had a 23% lower risk.
Timing also seemed to matter. On average, people with lower early-life sugar exposure developed dementia 2.6 years later than those who had more sugar early on.
Study author Jiazhen Zheng of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology said the results point to a possible long-term payoff from those earliest stages of life. “Our findings suggest that limiting sugar during the earliest stages of life may have lasting benefits for brain health,” Zheng said in the press release.
Still, the findings should not be treated like a slam dunk. Dariush Mozaffarian, director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University, said the work is interesting but not strong enough to prove sugar was the deciding factor.
“I’m impressed with the researchers’ creativity, pulling together information across decades to look at this question, but the findings are not convincing,” Mozaffarian told Fox News Digital.
His concern is simple: life during wartime and life after rationing were not identical in a thousand other ways. Overall nutrition, calorie intake, food quality, and plenty of other differences could have played a part, which makes sugar hard to isolate as the lone reason for the gap.
That said, the broader message lines up with standard nutrition advice for pregnancy. Mozaffarian said women who are pregnant should aim for the healthiest foods possible, both for their own well-being and for the baby’s development.
He pointed to minimally processed foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fermented dairy products, and fish. At the same time, he advised keeping ultra-processed foods with lots of sugar, starch, and salt to a minimum.
The study’s design also comes with real limits. It used a historical rationing policy as a stand-in for individual sugar intake, which means it could not measure exactly what each person ate or drank.
Because of that, the researchers said the results show an association, not proof. The study does not establish that lowering sugar intake early in life directly prevents dementia, only that the two appear linked in this large group.
Even with those caveats, the research adds weight to the idea that early nutrition matters in ways people do not always expect. The first years of life can shape everything from metabolism to development, and brain health may be part of that long chain too.
It also leaves a nagging question hanging in the air: if the earliest diet can influence the brain so many years later, what other quiet effects are getting built into the body before a child can even talk? That is the kind of question that keeps nutrition research moving, one carefully measured clue at a time.
