Republican congressional candidate Lily Tang Williams, who endured Mao’s Cultural Revolution in communist China, didn’t hold back during her recent debate against Democrat Maggie Goodlander in New Hampshire.

Goodlander, married to Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s national security adviser, became the target of Williams’ sharp criticism, which reflected her disdain for what she called “out-of-touch liberal elites.”

At one point in the debate, Williams delivered a fiery rebuke, telling Goodlander to “go back to your $2 million home in Portsmouth!” Her pointed words highlighted a core part of her campaign: contrasting her own experiences under a repressive regime with what she sees as the disconnect between the political elite and the everyday American.

Williams’ direct and no-nonsense style—shaped by her experience of surviving a brutal dictatorship—resonated with viewers looking for authenticity in their leaders.

Throughout the debate, Williams emphasized her concerns with what she sees as government overreach and the potential risks of authoritarian policies creeping into American politics.

Her approach starkly contrasted with Goodlander’s, who focused more on policy details and Biden administration accomplishments, especially in national security.

The exchange added tension to the congressional race, underscoring Williams’ commitment to advocating for liberty and her critical stance on political privilege. Her pointed remark about Goodlander’s wealth resonated with those frustrated by what they perceive as a political class detached from their realities.

Williams’ campaign highlights her journey from communist China to American democracy, and her debate performance reinforced her commitment to standing against any form of government overreach.

My opponent @MaggieG603 did not condemn her boss Biden calling 50% of Americans “garbage”. I called them both out.

I am running for Congress to save the American Dream. She has no solutions to help the people who are struggling besides her party talking points. @DeeD4747 https://t.co/G65jOljfqb

Willams also blasted Goodlander for refusing to condemn Biden for calling half of America “garbage.”

You can hear Williams’ story of coming to America and fleeing communism:

I arrived in Austin, TX on May 11, 1988, from China.

I became a naturalized citizen on Nov. 18, 1994, near 30 years ago. I was sworn in the US District Court for the State of Colorado.
