Americans Must Revive Walking, Outdoor Habits To Improve Health

This article argues that several once-common habits—from walking and morning sunlight to home cooking, time outdoors, household work, communal meals and intermittent fasting—deserve a comeback because they can blunt the rise in chronic disease, obesity and stress across the country.

Americans are facing a steady climb in chronic illness, and experts point to lifestyle shifts as a root cause. Suburban sprawl, longer commutes and more time parked in cars have quietly replaced daily movement with sitting. “As Americans moved further out of the city center for more space and larger homes, they spent more time sitting in a car rather than walking to work,” he told Fox News Digital.

Regular walking is an easy, low-cost habit that used to be built into daily life and could be again. The federal guidance recommending 150 minutes of moderate activity a week is achievable if communities and schedules allow for more movement. Simple city planning and a nudge to choose to walk can cut waistlines and help metabolic health.

Sunlight, especially morning light, plays a major role in sleep and hormonal balance, yet most people spend their mornings indoors. “Some individuals may have severe difficulty with sleep, and therefore are having difficulty regulating their personal day-night cycles,” Perry said. “It is well-known that early sunlight helps to regulate the circadian rhythm of animals and may be helpful in regulating sleep patterns.”

Better sleep habits matter beyond feeling rested: they affect weight, blood pressure and long-term disease risk. “The hormonal balance that is regulated by the circadian rhythm can also lead to better weight management and blood pressure control.” Turning in earlier and protecting seven to nine hours of sleep for adults can be a surprisingly effective public-health move.

Time spent in nature is another underused medicine for modern life; many Americans now log less than five hours outside each week. Studies show that getting at least 120 minutes a week in green spaces correlates with better health, and pairing nature with exercise boosts mental well-being and lowers chronic disease risk more than either alone. Our national parks and neighborhood trails are not just pretty—they are practical health infrastructure.

Our diet has shifted toward ultraprocessed foods, and the consequences are clear in rising diabetes, obesity and hypertension rates. “We know that excess calories, specifically calories from extra sugar in the diet, can lead to diabetes, obesity, hypertension and a multitude of downstream health problems,” Perry said. “Local, minimally processed foods are going to be much better for the overall health of society.”

There is also a cultural piece to good food: cooking and eating at home restores control over ingredients and portions. “We are a country of farmers – we need to eat our own fresh produce more and not the chemically laced products that can give us cancer and heart disease,” he told Fox News Digital. “We need to eat more at home, and treasure our great home chefs, who make everything from turkey to apple sauce, to fried chicken, to big healthy salads, to good old apple pie.”

Gardening and routine household chores do more than keep a home tidy; they build strength, reduce isolation and improve mood. A study found older adults who did more light and heavy housework showed better physical performance and balance than peers who did less. “Performing more household tasks can help individuals maintain strength and mobility. This is especially helpful for elderly individuals to maximize their physical strength and decrease the risk of being sedentary,” said Perry.

Eating together used to be a daily ritual that reinforced social bonds and mental health, and that social glue matters for longevity. “We know that social connections can minimize depression, reduce the incidence of dementia and actually lead to longer lives,” he told Fox News Digital. “Eating a meal with a group of people is a deeply powerful human event that can help improve lives.”

Simple social rituals offer more than nostalgia: they are active ingredients in a healthier society. One expert urged non-political community meals as a way to restore kindness and neighborly ties: “sharing kindness and goodwill with each other at community meals that are non-political.” He added, “We need to take pride in repairing our own houses the way we always have.”

Intermittent fasting comes up as another ancestral pattern that can help modern metabolisms adapt to an age of plenty. “There are some anecdotal reasons for this, given the evolutionary pressures that our species has had to endure,” he said. “We are now in a world where food is plentiful, but for much of our history, we had to search for food, and it was often scarce. This type of eating pattern mimics the pattern of our ancestors, which is directly connected with our innate metabolism.”

Not every old habit was better, but a selective revival of practical routines—more walking, morning light, outdoor time, earlier bedtimes, whole local foods, gardening, purposeful household activity, communal meals and strategic fasting—could move the needle on public health. These are low-cost, widely accessible changes that tap into how people once lived and how biology still works today.
