It can sprint hard, corner respectably, and keep a rear seat and trunk in the mix, which is exactly why it remains such a common reference point.
Even so, the cars below often land higher when experts weigh performance, comfort, and desirability together. Some are more focused, some are more luxurious, and a few manage to be both at once without feeling like a compromise.

These twins may not win straight-line bragging rights, but they deliver balanced handling and a lightweight feel that makes back roads more fun than spec sheets suggest. The tiny rear seat is mostly symbolic, yet the folding rear backrest and low starting prices make them appealing in a way many pricier sports cars never manage.
BMW’s 2-Series and M2 lineup lands in a useful middle ground. The 230i gives a taste of the formula, the M240i sharpens it, and the M2 turns the whole thing into a serious performance machine with up to 523 hp in CS form.
That range matters because it gives buyers more than one personality to choose from. The coupe layout, strong acceleration, and solid trunk space make these cars feel usable, while the higher trims add the sort of pace that makes short work of empty pavement.
The Porsche 911 sits in a class of its own, and that reputation is no accident. It keeps showing up near the top of expert rankings because it nails the balance of speed, steering feel, and precision better than almost anything with a rear seat.
Even the base Carrera brings 388 hp and a 3.1-second 0-60 time, which is wild for an entry model. Add the Targa, Cabriolet, GTS, Turbo, or GT3, and the 911 becomes less a single car than a whole ladder of temptation, each rung more expensive and more extreme than the last.
