The events of last Friday in Northwest Washington, DC have sparked an intense investigation after a teenage suspect was shot by US Marshals.
The incident occurred in the early hours of July 5, as two marshals, who were part of the protective detail for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, confronted an 18-year-old named Kentrell Flowers.
According to the publicly available police report, Flowers approached a Deputy US Marshal sitting in his car outside Justice Sotomayor’s condominium at around 1:15 am and allegedly pointed a handgun at him in an attempt to steal the vehicle.
In response, the marshal drew his service weapon and fired multiple shots, with another marshal from a different vehicle also responding by firing their service weapon.
Flowers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
He has since been arrested and charged with armed carjacking, carrying a pistol without a license, and possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device.
The incident took place at the Beauregard Condominiums in North West DC, where Justice Sotomayor owns a condo.
The officers involved in the shooting were confirmed to be part of her protection team.
During the investigation, law enforcement authorities recovered the handgun allegedly used by Flowers for the attempted carjacking. However, there are still ongoing efforts to locate the silver 2017 Toyota Sienna minivan that was involved in the incident.
The shooting is currently being investigated by the PD’s Internal Affairs Division Force Investigations Team and will be independently reviewed by the United States Attorney’s Office.
This incident comes during a concerning spike in carjackings and stolen vehicles in Washington, DC. More than 900 carjackings and over 6,000 stolen vehicles were reported in 2023, marking a significant increase compared to previous years.
