WWE is loading up Saturday Night’s Main Event at Madison Square Garden, and the whole card has that old-school big-fight feel. New York gets a packed night of chaos, title drama, and personality clashes, with the biggest ripple effect aimed straight at SummerSlam and the Undisputed WWE Championship picture.
One of the first matches out of the gate is Danhausen against JD McDonagh in a no disqualification fight, and this one already has enough weird energy to snap a crowd awake. The Judgment Day have been irritated with Danhausen for weeks after he took Dominik Mysterio and McDonagh’s money without delivering the curse they wanted, and that nonsense has only made the grudge uglier.
Things got even more personal when Mysterio and McDonagh swiped the Knicks jersey that had been handed to Danhausen after the team’s championship celebration. Turning the bout into a no DQ match feels like the kind of move that usually rewards the louder, crazier competitor, and in this spot the pressure of a New York crowd seems like a bad sign for McDonagh.
The women’s tag team title match has a very different kind of tension. Paige and Brie Bella have held the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship since WrestleMania 42, but Lainey Reid and Fallon Henley have been rolling since their main roster arrival and now they get a shot to blow the whole division wide open.
Fatal Influence has looked sharp, aggressive, and ready for a breakout moment, which makes this feel like the kind of match where the challengers could catch fire at the perfect time. Paige and Brie bring the star power and experience, but the momentum edge seems to sit with Reid and Henley, who have been acting like the belts already belong to them.
Then there is Bayley against Lyra Valkyria, a match built on betrayal and hard feelings. Valkyria and Bayley used to be aligned, but a tag team title loss blew that up, and Valkyria has since blamed Bayley for holding her back instead of helping her grow.
That kind of split usually turns into something personal fast, and the Garden should be a loud place for it to boil over. Bayley has the edge in experience, but Valkyria has the sharper emotional urgency right now, and that can be dangerous when someone is wrestling with something to prove.
The biggest spotlight, though, belongs to CM Punk and Cody Rhodes facing Gunther and Sami Zayn in a tag team showdown with SummerSlam consequences hanging over it. Zayn stunned the wrestling world by winning the undisputed WWE title at Night of Champions in June, only to lose it nine days later when Punk stormed back on Monday Night Raw and took the championship from him.
Rhodes has been tangled up in the same storm for more than a month, and the story keeps twisting because the result on Saturday could change the SummerSlam title match itself. If Gunther and Zayn win, they get added to the championship fight, which means every mistake matters a little more and every cheap shot carries a bigger payoff.
That’s the kind of setup WWE loves when it wants the audience leaning forward instead of sitting back. Punk and Rhodes have enough star power to carry the moment, while Gunther and Zayn bring the kind of grit that can make the whole thing look one second away from falling apart in the best possible way.
