As the NBA Finals heat up, there is one coach who is making headlines for more than just his team’s performance on the court.
Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has been praised by many for his bold response to a question about race during a recent press conference.
Mazzulla, who is one of only two black head coaches in the NBA, was asked by a reporter about the significance of having two black coaches facing off in the Finals.
“For the first time since 1975… you have two black coaches. Given the plight, sometimes with black head coaches in the NBA, do you think this is a significant moment? Do you take pride in this? How do you view this, or do you not see it at all?”
But instead of taking the bait and engaging in a conversation about race, Mazzulla turned the question into one about faith.
“I wonder how many of those have been Christian coaches.”
The room fell silent as Mazzulla’s unexpected response sunk in.

Mazzulla’s refusal to engage in divisive identity politics is not surprising considering his background. He grew up in a Christian household and has always been vocal about his faith.
But it’s not just his personal beliefs that have caught people’s attention; it’s also his coaching style.
Despite being one of the youngest head coaches in the league at just 36 years old, Mazzulla has quickly gained respect from players and fans alike for his no-nonsense approach and strong leadership skills.
And while some may try to make the NBA Finals about race, Mazzulla is focused on one thing: winning.
He knows that the only color that truly matters in sports is the color of your team’s jersey.
In a time where everything seems to be politicized and divided along racial lines, Mazzulla’s response serves as a refreshing reminder that there are more important things to focus on.
Instead of focusing on their race, let’s focus on their shared passion for basketball and their mutual respect for each other as coaches.
