Trump Advances Permanent Daylight Saving Time, Sleep Experts Warn

The debate over ending the twice-yearly clock change has moved back into the spotlight as Republicans push to lock in daylight saving time year-round, clashing with sleep experts who warn of biological downsides; this piece lays out the political momentum, the health arguments, and the trade-offs at stake.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee recently advanced legislation to make daylight saving time permanent in a near-unanimous 48-1 vote, and conservative leaders have rallied around the idea as common-sense relief from the twice-yearly shuffle. Supporters pitch it as a practical win: more evening light for families, more time for business after work, and an end to disruptive clock changes. That message lands well with voters who are tired of adjusting schedules each spring and fall.

TRUMP CHAMPIONS BID TO NIX CLOCK CHANGES BY ADOPTING PERMANENT DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Advocates argue permanent DST would boost recreation, commerce and community life by keeping evenings brighter later in the winter months. From a Republican standpoint this is a small-government fix that restores predictability and helps local economies without adding new mandates. It’s an attractive pitch: fewer headaches, more customers out after work, and no twice-yearly ripple of missed appointments and grumpy mornings.

Still, the science community urges caution. “Ending the biannual clock change is something most sleep scientists and the public would welcome,” she said. “The disruption of springing forward every March is associated with real, measurable harm — spikes in car crashes, heart attacks and sleep deprivation.” That sentence alone explains why many people want the clock swaps to stop, but it does not resolve the hard choice about which permanent time to set.

“not supported by science.” Many prominent sleep medicine groups lean the other way: they favor permanent standard time because it aligns better with human biology. “Standard time is more closely aligned with human circadian biology, meaning the relationship between light, darkness and our internal clocks remains intact,” the expert explained, and that alignment matters for daytime alertness and nighttime sleep.

There is historical precedent that matters. The U.S. tried permanent DST in the early 1970s and reversed course within a year. “Within a year, the law was repealed amid public displeasure with commuting to work and school in the dark and increases in morning car crashes, and with no demonstrable impact on energy savings,” Troxel told Fox News Digital. That experience shows real-world consequences can outweigh theoretical gains.

Human circadian rhythms are tightly tied to morning sunlight. “You cannot override that biology by simply shifting external clocks forward,” the expert said. “What you get instead is a population that is effectively waking up in the middle of their biological night, every single day.” That misalignment can increase daytime sleepiness, reduce concentration and worsen public safety for morning commuters and schoolchildren.

“Morning light is crucial to regulate sleep, alertness and support mental health, and this would be sacrificed with permanent daylight saving time,” she noted. “More evening light may feel enjoyable, in part because we equate it with lovely summer evenings, but permanent daylight saving time does not mean permanent summer,” Troxel emphasized. “It just means we will get less morning sunlight and more evening sunlight.”

“Exposure to light in the evening further pushes circadian rhythms later, making it more difficult to fall asleep and harder to wake up in the morning.” Those shifts are not hypothetical for many regions; in some places sunrise would occur near 9 a.m. in winter under permanent DST, a change linked in studies with higher rates of seasonal mood problems. Teenagers are especially vulnerable because they already trend toward later biological sleep times.

“Framing permanent DST as a fix for seasonal depression gets the science exactly backwards,” she added. Policymakers who want the simplicity of a single time year-round should weigh convenience against measurable health and safety trade-offs. Republicans pushing this change can make a persuasive case for voters, but the experts insist the selection of which permanent time matters just as much as the desire to end the clock flipping.
