Team USA Hockey Equipment Manager Arrested In Florida For Battery

Here’s the situation in plain English: a longtime hockey equipment manager tied to Team USA and the Florida Panthers has been arrested in Florida on misdemeanor charges, and the fallout has already started. The case has put a familiar behind-the-scenes figure in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, with the Panthers moving quickly to distance the organization while questions hang over his future.

Thaddeus “Teddy” Richards was arrested Friday night in Coral Springs, Florida, according to online records. He faces misdemeanor counts of battery/domestic violence and unauthorized use of 911 services, which is the kind of headline no team wants attached to one of its staff members.

The Panthers said they were aware of the incident and made clear that Richards would be taken out of team business right away. In a short statement, the organization said he would be suspended from all team activities and facilities while the matter is reviewed.

That response was swift, and for good reason. When an employee is accused of domestic violence-related misconduct, teams usually move fast to show they are not brushing it aside, especially when the person has worked around high-profile players and championship celebrations.

Richards has spent years building his reputation in hockey circles, starting in Pennsylvania before moving into pro hockey jobs with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. He worked with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins from 2002 through 2013, then stepped up to an assistant equipment manager role with Pittsburgh from 2013 to 2016.

His time with the Penguins included a Stanley Cup run in 2016, which put him inside a winning locker room and likely helped cement his standing around the league. After that championship season, he left Pittsburgh and joined the Panthers, where he became the team’s equipment manager beginning in the 2016-17 campaign.

He was around for some huge moments in Florida. Richards was part of the Panthers’ back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2023-24 and 2024-25, and that kind of longevity makes him a recognizable part of the operation even if he rarely shows up in the spotlight.

His name also came up through Team USA, where he served as equipment manager for the men’s hockey team during major international events. That included the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025 and the Milan Cortina Olympic Winter Games in 2026, giving him a role on some of the sport’s biggest stages.

Part of that path traces back to his earlier years with Mike Sullivan, who coached Richards during the Penguins era and later led Team USA in those international competitions. In hockey, relationships matter, and connections built over years can open the door to roles that come with a lot of responsibility and trust.

The arrest now puts all of that in a different light. A job that is usually invisible unless something goes wrong suddenly became part of a much bigger story, and the suspension means Richards will not be around the team while the legal process plays out.

As for USA Hockey, a response was not immediately available, leaving more unanswered questions than answers for the moment. That silence is not unusual this early, but it does mean the story is likely to keep moving as more details come out and both the team and the league keep an eye on what happens next.
