Study Links Super Movers To Half The Risk Of Cognitive Decline

New research tracking more than 4,000 people aged 80 and up suggests a clear link between faster walking and sharper thinking: a small group of “super movers” — seniors who walk at speeds typical of people decades younger — showed roughly half the risk of cognitive decline compared with peers who move more slowly, and the results point to mobility as a potentially powerful marker of brain resilience.

The study, led by Stony Brook Medicine in New York, followed older adults enrolled in long-running aging and longevity research. Researchers measured walking speed and monitored cognitive function over time to see who developed impairment. The group was large enough to sketch a consistent pattern rather than a one-off observation.

Just 6% to 10% of participants fit the “super mover” profile, meaning their usual walking pace outstripped others of the same age and gender and matched speeds you’d expect from people about 30 years younger. Those who fell into that fast-walking group ended up with a substantially lower rate of cognitive decline. The headline finding was published in the journal Neurology on June 16.

“The study reinforces that mobility and brain health are closely connected,” lead study author Dr. Joe Verghese, MD, neurologist at Stony Brook Medicine, told Fox News Digital. “This suggests that preserving mobility may be an important marker of healthy brain aging and resilience.”

What made the results especially striking was a postmortem look at brains from participants: the super movers showed similar dementia-related changes in their brains as slower walkers, yet kept better cognitive function while alive. “This suggests they may possess resilience mechanisms that help preserve brain function even in the presence of age-related changes,” he said. “Understanding these resilience factors could lead to new strategies for promoting healthy brain aging.”

The investigators were careful to note limits: this was observational work, so it cannot prove that brisk walking prevents dementia. “Other factors, such as cardiovascular health, physical fitness or genetics, may also contribute to both faster walking and better cognitive outcomes,” Verghese said. Still, the pattern adds to a growing body of evidence tying heart and muscle health to brain outcomes.

Public health advice lines up with these findings. Major guidelines recommend aiming for about 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity, like brisk walking, which can be split into daily sessions or shorter stints that add up. For many older adults, regular movement is a practical, low-tech way to support overall health.

“The broader message is that physical activity is important at any age,” Verghese said. “Walking is an easy step-up point because you don’t need any special equipment. You can do it inside or outdoors, and you can do it on a regular basis. You can walk with a dog, you can walk with a friend.”

“You have to do it within your health limitations and medical conditions,” Verghese advised. “So if there are any medical concerns, I would get your physician to clear you before starting exercise.” Starting slowly and building up to a brisker pace, then layering in strength and balance work, is a practical approach for most people. “And then adding on strength and balance training, whatever age you are, I think is also important.”
