Starbucks Plans Over 200 Corporate Layoffs, Relocation Cuts Lead

Starbucks is pushing deeper into its turnaround plan with another round of corporate cuts, and the move shows just how serious the company is about reshaping its business. The latest layoffs, tied to restructuring and relocation decisions, come as the coffee giant keeps trying to tighten operations, steady store performance, and make its cafes feel more central to the brand again.

Starbucks has filed notice for more than 200 corporate job cuts, a step that follows an earlier plan to trim roughly 300 roles from the corporate side. About 120 of those separations involve support team employees connected to coffeehouse design and development who chose not to move from Seattle to Nashville.

Another 104 positions are being removed because of broader organizational changes laid out earlier this year. The company said the layoffs are part of work already underway, not a fresh change in direction, and the timing points to a larger reset still rolling forward behind the scenes.

The first separations are expected on Oct. 19, 2026, with the process set to wrap up by Nov. 1, 2026. That gives the company a short runway to finish the cuts while it keeps the rest of its turnaround machinery moving.

Even with the corporate trimming, Starbucks says its coffeehouse strategy is still the heart of the plan. The company is keeping its focus on the “third place experience,” the idea that its stores should feel like a comfortable stop between home and work, with better design, a stronger atmosphere, and a clearer reason for people to linger.

That shift has already shown up in store changes meant to make the cafes feel warmer and more personal. The company has leaned into touches like writing names on cups, serving drinks in mugs, and adjusting interiors so customers are more likely to stay awhile instead of grabbing a drink and heading out the door.

Starbucks is also trying to make the operational side less messy and more dependable. That includes improving staffing levels, making mobile orders run more smoothly, and cutting down the wait by setting a goal of having drinks ready in four minutes or less.

The corporate changes are also tied to Starbucks’ new regional office in Nashville, a project with a price tag of about $100 million. The site is expected to house around 2,000 employees, even as the company keeps its headquarters in Seattle and continues to manage the shift in where its people work.

Brian Niccol, who took over in September 2024, has been steering the company through this broader cleanup after becoming Starbucks’ third CEO in a two-year stretch. His plan has centered on bringing more energy back to stores, cutting friction for customers, and making the brand feel sharper after a rougher stretch of pressure and drift.

Last year, Starbucks also closed some underperforming locations, cut 900 non-retail partner roles, and froze many open jobs while it restructured. The latest job cuts fit that same pattern, with the company still trying to trim weight in one place while building momentum in another, all while its cafe strategy keeps getting a tougher, more urgent rewrite.
