The new family mystery movie “The Sheep Detectives” turns a cozy English whodunit into a warmhearted adventure where a flock of unusually sharp sheep take the lead, blending laughs, emotion and a genuine sense of wonder into a picture that wants to be seen by families and fans of quirky comedies alike.

You won’t be counting sheep during “The Sheep Detectives.” Adapted from the 2005 Leonie Swann novel “Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story,” the premise is delightfully simple and oddly clever: a secluded shepherd named George Hardy reads murder mysteries to his flock and has no idea they understand every single word. That setup gives the film a smart, playful hook that pays off in both jokes and genuine intrigue as the animals decide to solve a real crime.

When George becomes the victim of his own bedtime tales, the flock takes matters into their own hooves and begins an investigation of their own, with the urgency and earnestness of a small-town amateur sleuth club. Lead sheep Lily, voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, becomes the brains of the operation and the moral center for her comrades, while Mopple, voiced by Chris O’Dowd, brings clear-headed humor to the proceedings. The ensemble voice work gives the flock distinct personalities and keeps the mystery moving at an upbeat pace.

The human cast adds texture and motive to the story without stealing the spotlight from the animals. There are plenty of suspects who might want George gone, including a rival shepherd, a local butcher, an innkeeper and even an estranged daughter who carry grudges or secrets that make the town of Denbrook feel nicely layered. The film smartly balances these tense human beats with the sheep’s investigation, so the audience feels the stakes but never loses the cozy tone that keeps it family friendly.

Beyond the flock you meet a wide supporting cast who slot into familiar but fun roles: Bryan Cranston provides a quiet strength as one of the sheep voices, Regina Hall brings comic gossip, Patrick Stewart offers a distinguished Elder, and Brett Goldstein plays rambunctious twins for a welcome burst of brash energy. Human roles are filled by players like Emma Thompson as a sharp attorney, Nicholas Galitzine as a nosy reporter and Nicholas Braun as a well-meaning local cop who ends up being corralled into the mystery. The movie keeps everyone useful and amusing without turning any performance into a cameo parade.

‘THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2’ REVIEW: MERYL STREEP, ANNE HATHAWAY RETURN FOR A CHIC BUT BLAND SEQUEL The film also surprises by finding a real emotional core that digs into grief and the search for belonging, themes that sit underneath the jokes and the sleuthing. It has the sweet, old-fashioned family-movie energy of films like Babe, where anthropomorphic animals are both charming and sincere, and the emotional beats land without feeling forced or manipulative. That quiet heart makes the comedic moments land harder and gives the story something to chew on beyond the who and the how.

Behind the camera the movie benefits from director Kyle Balda, an animator with a knack for playful visual storytelling who brings a bright, expressive tone to the film, and writer Craig Mazin, who switches gears from heavier fare to deliver thoughtful comedy with surprising tenderness. The result is a film that looks and feels like a lively animated caper even when it relies on human drama to raise the stakes. Production values are clean, the pacing stays brisk and the filmmakers clearly trusted the material to carry both laughs and feeling.

‘MICHAEL’ REVIEW: A HOLLOW INFOMERCIAL PACKAGED AS A BIOPIC OF THE KING OF POP Charming and delightful, “The Sheep Detectives” is the kind of family film that stands out because it remembers to be gentle and clever at the same time. It pulls off the rare trick of being funny for adults and endlessly entertaining for kids, while still giving its characters some real heart to work through. “The Sheep Detectives” is rated PG for thematic material, some violent content and brief language.. Running time: 1 hour, 49 minutes. In theaters now.
