Why Republicans Should Refuse to Save Obamacare

We are in the middle of predictable chaos because Democrats want a government shutdown to force a permanent bailout for Obamacare. They shout about premium shock as if that justifies turning a temporary pandemic fix into forever policy. The blunt truth is Democrats are asking Republicans to prop up a broken law they passed and never fixed.

Obamacare was never built to be self-sustaining and it is collapsing under its own contradictions. A pandemic stopgap turned into an ongoing entitlement, and now the left wants us to cement that stopgap as permanent. Conservatives should refuse to be the safety net for a failed experiment in central planning.

In 2021 Democrats passed enhanced subsidies meant to blunt COVID-era disruption, and on paper that looked reasonable. Those subsidies were temporary by design, not a new baseline for American health policy. Instead, Democratic leaders normalized the exception and called it progress.

Remember the temporary extension under the banner of recovery? That extension was pushed forward, and now we are asked to make it permanent through emergency measures. The temporary became the normal under this administration, and that is how unsustainable budgets are born.

Embracing that emergency as permanent policy is not compromise, it is capitulation. It would lock in higher federal spending and mask the underlying failure of the market structures Obamacare created. Republicans should be clear: we will not paper over systemic failure with endless subsidies.

Listen to what the other side is demanding: “Democrats have demanded that Republicans agree to extend covid-era insurance subsidies without proposed any way to pay for it.” That line perfectly captures the tone-deafness of Democratic politics right now. They want a blank check and a standing ovation for doing nothing to solve the real problems.

There are structural reasons premiums rise that Democrats refuse to confront openly. As the Washington Post put it, “The real problem is that the Affordable Care Act was never actually affordable. President Barack Obama’s signature achievement allowed people to buy insurance on marketplaces with subsidies based on their income. The architects of the program assumed that risk pools would be bigger than they turned out to be. As a result, policies cost more than expected.”

Put bluntly, subsidies paper over design flaws and end up rewarding instability. Instead of fixing risk pools, managing costs, or expanding choices, Democrats want to increase subsidies and call it compassion. That choice makes the problem worse and creates a new dependence on federal largesse.

Illegal Immigration and Hidden Costs

The bills keep growing and not all the costs are obvious. Many Democratic-run states have figured out how to reroute federal money to cover services for illegal immigrants, which further drives up demand and expense. That dynamic undermines both rule of law and budget sanity.

Blue states, however, have developed workarounds to restrictions on federal funding for immigrant health care. Fourteen states supposedly use their own resources to fund comprehensive benefits for low-income children of illegal workers, while seven do so for adults. Beginning in 2024, California promised to cover all immigrants regardless of age or legal status. This effort relied heavily on indirect federal funding, laundered through the healthcare industry: the state imposed a $5 billion tax on insurers covering Medicaid enrollees, for which it claimed additional federal matching funds.

That paragraph is a map of how costs multiply when politics overrides policy. Democrats want Republicans to restore and expand subsidies while turning a blind eye to how the money is diverted. Republicans should call out that hypocrisy and expose the fiscal angles that Democrats refuse to admit.

Instead of answering these hard questions, Democrats have used fear of premium spikes as political leverage. They have decided to weaponize anxiety and demand Republican surrender rather than negotiate policy reforms. That is not governing; it is extortion dressed up as compassion.

The Wall Street Journal’s playbook suggestion makes sense politically and morally: “Republicans could spend their time this week explaining why the Biden expansion is bad policy and offering better ideas, instead of letting themselves be hostage to Democratic extortion.” Republicans should hold that line and offer a plan, not a bailout.

Republicans must propose alternatives that actually address affordability, like expanded choice, cross-state competition, and targeted assistance for those truly in need. Replace the one-size-fits-all federal bailouts with market-based reforms that expand access and lower costs. That is honest, conservative policy, not a PR stunt to save a failing program.

The left keeps promising big solutions and delivers bigger problems: higher costs, worse access, and more government control. As the debate tightens, Republicans have an obligation to oppose permanent subsidies that entrench those failures. We should push for responsible, durable reforms instead of short-term fixes that buy votes and blow up budgets.

This is a moment to be unapologetic about principles. Don’t accept the premise that the government must forever prop up a law that failed by design. Hold the line, force a debate, and replace failure with a Republican plan that actually helps Americans without bankrupting the country.

Repeal and replace was not just a slogan; it was a promise to fix what Obamacare broke. Now is the time to keep that promise with clarity, courage, and policies that make healthcare work again for people, not for political machines.
