McIlroy Slams DeChambeau After Open Penalty Chaos

Rory McIlroy did not hold back Saturday at The Open, and his comments added a fresh jolt to an already tense tournament. After Bryson DeChambeau was hit with a two-stroke penalty following a rules dispute, McIlroy made it clear he thought the whole episode had gone too far. The mood around the penalty was already heated, and his blunt reaction pushed it even further into the spotlight.

McIlroy was asked about DeChambeau’s behavior after Friday’s round, when officials ruled that the golfer had improved his lie and assessed the penalty after a drawn-out exchange. McIlroy, fresh off a third-round 1-under 69, said he had no interest in softening his view. He called the scene overblown and said the delay left too many people hanging around while the issue dragged on.

“I won’t pretend to be up here and defend Bryson,” McIlroy told reporters after shooting a 1-under 69 in the third round. “I’m not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of it is performative. I think a lot of it’s for attention.

“To hold the tournament hostage like that and to have all of us — players, volunteers, everyone — waiting on him to depart, I didn’t feel like it was a great look.”

McIlroy also said he believed DeChambeau’s actions around the shot in question crossed the line, whether they were intentional or not. In his view, the issue was less about motive and more about what the video and the ruling seemed to show. He added that the penalty fit the situation, and he did not sound interested in giving much benefit of the doubt.

“I think there’s no doubt that he improved the line of his backswing,” McIlroy said. “Again, it’s like, whether it was careless or whether it was intentional, I don’t think it matters. Hopefully, it was careless, but I think the two-shot penalty was justified, for sure.”

Not everyone around the championship saw it the same way. Xander Schauffele took a more forgiving tone and called the whole thing unfortunate, especially because DeChambeau had been playing so well before the penalty landed. His view was that even if the ruling was tough, DeChambeau still had plenty of golf left to answer back.

“He said he didn’t do it intentionally, and it’s unfortunate that he got penalized because he was playing incredibly well, and obviously he’s still playing incredibly well,” Schauffele said. “So, he’s obviously going to have something to prove these next two days.”

DeChambeau did exactly that, responding with a steady third round and finishing the day at 6-under for the tournament. He remained four shots behind Sam Burns, who grabbed the lead at 10-under after a 5-under Saturday. That left the Sunday picture still wide open, with a lot of attention now fixed on whether the penalty would end up shaping the final outcome.

If DeChambeau ends up within striking distance of the winner, the argument over the two-stroke call is going to keep buzzing long after the final putt. That is the kind of situation golf fans love to dissect, because the line between a tough break and a self-inflicted mess can get blurry fast. McIlroy, meanwhile, sat tied for 30th at 2-under and would need a huge final round and some serious help to climb into the mix.

Even with the drama swirling, the championship was still moving toward a tense finish. DeChambeau had the kind of round that kept him alive, McIlroy had already lit the fuse with his comments, and the rest of the field was left to deal with the noise around them. At this point, the only thing that seems certain is that Sunday is not going to feel quiet.
