World Cup Third Place Teams, Get $29 Million Prize Boost

France and England are set for the World Cup third-place game, and while nobody is pretending it is the final everybody dreams about, there is still real tension in the air. Both sides stumbled in the semifinals, but this matchup still carries money, pride, and a chance for a few stars to leave the tournament on a high note.

The bronze final is often treated like a footnote, but it has its own kind of pressure. For some players, it is one last chance to shape the story of their tournament, and for the teams, it is a shot at avoiding the sting of fourth place. That is enough to make Saturday feel a lot bigger than the label suggests.

One of the biggest reasons to pay attention is the Golden Boot race. Four players in this match are still in the mix, and every touch near goal could matter more than usual. Kylian Mbappé leads the pack with eight goals, tied overall with Lionel Messi, while Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Ousmane Dembélé all sit right behind with six.

That kind of chase changes the mood fast. A brace can flip the leaderboard, and even a single sharp finish could keep somebody alive in the race. If you are looking for extra stakes beyond the team result, this is where they show up.

The reward is not just individual, either. The prize money gets a bump based on where a team finishes, so third place is worth more than fourth in a very real way. The fourth-place finisher takes home $27 million, while the bronze medal side walks away with $29 million.

That may not sound like championship money, but at this level every bit counts. Teams do not travel, train, and grind through a World Cup just to shrug off a two million dollar difference. Even in a consolation match, the wallet still has a seat at the table.

History also gives this game some bite. England’s best World Cup finish remains the 1966 title, and that is still the only time the country has reached the final. In its previous semifinal runs, England ended up in fourth place, including as recently as 2018.

France has a different kind of storyline, with Didier Deschamps coaching his final match for the national team. He guided France to the World Cup crown in 2018, so the closing chapter has a little symmetry to it. Ending with a win would be a clean way to close that run, especially in a game where the margin between satisfaction and disappointment is so thin.

There is something raw about a third-place game because it forces a team to reset quickly after a semifinal loss. Nobody wants to spend a week replaying what went wrong, but they also do not want to leave the tournament empty-handed. That mix of frustration and motivation can produce a strange, fast-paced match where pride starts driving the legs.

England and France also bring enough talent to make this one worth the watch on its own merits. Even without a trophy on the line, the names alone can pull attention, and the attacking players in particular have a chance to turn the match into a personal showcase. Fans who tune in may get a game that feels looser than a final, but no less intense in the moments that matter.

The setting adds to the atmosphere as well, with the match taking place in Miami and kicking off in the late afternoon. For one team, the night ends with a bronze finish and a fatter check. For the other, it ends with a long flight home and a second straight loss that will take a while to shake off.
