Can Generators Run On Biodiesel, What To Know

Biodiesel can work in generators, but the answer is not a simple yes or no. It depends on the fuel blend, the generator design, and how much extra care you are willing to put into storage, temperature control, and maintenance.

Here is the basic split: low blends like B5 and B20 are usually a straightforward fit for many standard diesel engines, while pure B100 is a much bigger ask. Biodiesel is made from sources like vegetable oils, animal fats, and recycled cooking grease, which gives it cleaner-burning qualities but also changes how it behaves in a fuel system.

B5 and B20 mix regular diesel with a small amount of biodiesel, and that lower concentration is why they tend to be the safer choice for unmodified equipment. Once you move up to B100, the fuel gets thicker, and that extra viscosity can create real headaches inside a standard generator.

That thickness is not just an abstract technical detail. In a generator that was built for regular diesel, B100 may not flow the way it should, which can affect performance and stress fuel components. In colder weather, it can also gel, and when that happens the whole system can get sluggish or clogged.

If you are thinking about using B100 anyway, the first stop should be the manual. If the paperwork is unclear, a technician or manufacturer support line can tell you whether the generator is actually rated for that fuel or whether you are about to create a mess.

To run pure biodiesel properly, some generators need modifications. Fuel lines, filters, and other components may need to be swapped out, and many setups also need a separate tank plus a way to keep the fuel warm so it stays usable when temperatures drop.

Storage matters just as much as the machine itself. Biodiesel should be kept in a climate-controlled space if possible, because bad storage can shorten its usable life and raise the odds of problems later on.

If that sounds like too much hassle, there is another route: buy a generator built for biodiesel from the start. Companies such as Cat and Arken make biodiesel-ready models, but even then, you still need to check the exact blend rating before pouring anything in the tank.

A generator rated for B20 is not a free pass for B100. Using a stronger blend than the equipment was designed for can lead to mechanical trouble fast, and that is the kind of mistake that turns a backup power plan into a repair bill.

There is a good reason biodiesel keeps getting attention, though. Compared with regular diesel, B100 can cut emissions a lot, and studies cited by the Department of Energy show an average reduction of 74 percent in life cycle emissions.

It also has a lubrication advantage in compatible engines, which can be a real plus for people who care about engine wear. That said, the benefits start to fade once you factor in the fuel’s rough edges, especially if you live somewhere cold or need reliable long-term storage.

B100 is not just fussy in winter. It can also grow mold if it sits too long in warm conditions, which is another reason it is not always the easy, low-maintenance option people hope for.

Availability is another sticking point. Regular diesel is easy to find almost anywhere, but biodiesel distribution is much more limited, and the price gap is not always in your favor either.

By the end of 2025, B20 was roughly on par with diesel, while B100 was nearly a dollar more per gallon. So if you are weighing the switch, the real question is whether the cleaner burn and engine benefits are worth the extra effort, the storage rules, and the added cost.
