Zohran Mamdani made clear that New York City was open to the press for a meeting with President Donald Trump, even as Trump continued defending his decision to shut certain outlets out of the White House. The exchange put two very different media philosophies on full display, with Mamdani welcoming broad coverage and Trump arguing that some outlets had crossed the line into unfairness and distortion.
At Gracie Mansion, Mamdani said all members of the press were welcome on the lawn and framed that as a basic principle, not a favor. When asked whether he had pushed back on Trump’s move to bar CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, he said, “I told the president that we’re going to have all of the members of the press here on the lawn. And that is something that I believe in, as everyone, no matter the opinion or the critique that we engage in,” Mamdani said.
Trump used the moment to argue that the media should not expect access without responsibility. He pointed to the coverage he receives and said the press had an obligation to do a better job of reporting his record, from the economy to foreign policy.
“It’s interesting because they said they were going to boycott me, but they never boycott me. So I wasn’t very worried about that. Look at all that press,” Trump said. He then brushed aside the idea that the excluded outlets had real leverage over the event, making it clear he believed the spotlight would find him either way.
Trump said he was willing to engage with reporters at Gracie Mansion, but not because he trusted how they covered him. Instead, he said the media had a duty to be fair, and he argued that his administration had delivered results strong enough to earn better treatment than it was getting.
“I’m only doing it because I think the press also has an obligation,” he said. “We have the best economic numbers for the country in the history of our country. We have $21 trillion pouring in, the biggest number ever… Nobody’s ever done what we’ve done,” he added.
The fight over access did not stop there. Trump also argued that letting certain outlets back into the White House would be bad for national security, repeating his long-running complaint that they publish what he sees as false and hostile coverage.
“I never get anything positive. It’s always negative, even having to do with the war. We’ve done so well,” he said, referring to Iran. “You would think that an outlet would write at least reasonably well, but never. If you look at CNN, it’s fake news,” he added.
He then sharpened the point even more, saying the issue was bigger than his own frustration and tied to the country itself. In his view, these outlets were not just criticizing him, they were hurting the public debate and undercutting national security.
“They’re very bad for the country, very bad for national security. So I have that obligation. So we’ll see how it works out,” he said.
The appearance came as the White House press pool was already dealing with the fallout from the coverage dispute, with several major networks involved in the broader standoff. That added another layer to a tense day, with the meeting at Gracie Mansion serving as a sharp contrast between an open-door posture in New York and the tighter controls Trump has favored in Washington.
