Mainstream Media Push False ICE Narrative, DHS Confirms

The image of a 5-year-old in Minnesota sparked a fierce media reaction that ignored key facts, and this article walks through what really happened, how outlets framed it, and why the story reveals a broader bias about immigration enforcement and the Biden era’s border failures.

A photo can move people, but it does not always tell the whole story. In this case the boy at the center of the image is Liam Ramos, and authorities say his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, fled when ICE approached. Reporters leaned into shock and “awwww” instead of firmly checking the sequence of events reported by officials.

The press chased sensational language, trotting out words like “upsetting,” “firestorm,” “controversy,” “outrage,” “haunting” to ratchet up emotion. Several outlets amplified the idea that agents used the child as “bait” to capture his father. That framing stuck before most audiences could see the official account or the context law enforcement provided.

The facts released by DHS paint a different picture: the father is an Ecuadorian national who entered the country without authorization and had been released into the United States by the Biden administration. When agents approached, officials say the father ran and left the child behind, which prompted officers to remain with the boy for his safety. Authorities later located and detained the father, and both are now in a facility in Dilley, Texas, where officials say they have been kept together and cared for.

Journalists repeatedly ignored the obvious practical duty at play: when a parent is detained, officers cannot simply leave a small child unattended. Images of a child with a winter hat and a Spider-Man backpack are emotionally powerful, but they do not prove a strategy or conspiracy by ICE. As Vice President JD Vance put it, “Are they supposed to let a 5-year-old child freeze to death?” — a blunt question about the real-world choices officers face.

Mainstream outlets rarely acknowledged how Biden administration border policies contributed to this outcome. Coverage instead centered on outrage and moral theater, which conveniently aligns with calls to limit immigration enforcement. That one-sided spin ignores how policies that relaxed controls and released migrants into the interior have real consequences for communities and for how agents must act on the ground.

Some reporters and commentators treated the photo as a rallying symbol, invoking historic images to heighten moral stakes and steer public opinion. That move turns journalism into advocacy: choose a single picture, attach an accusation like “bait,” and let the emotional reaction carry the story. It is a strategy that protects the policy choices that made the situation possible while painting enforcement as inherently cruel.

Local voices who questioned ICE were often highlighted, while other perspectives were sidelined, including how law enforcement procedures work and why officers keep children nearby when parents are detained. Legal and practical reality got less attention than outrage theater. The result is predictable: public anger aimed at agents doing a difficult job while root causes go unexamined.

Republicans and conservative observers see this as part of a consistent media pattern: amplify emotional snapshots, tag them with moral verdicts, and avoid scrutiny of the policies that invited the scenario. That approach shifts blame away from the administration that loosened border controls and toward the officials charged with enforcing the law, and it hampers clear debate about practical solutions moving forward.
