Liz Wheeler Warns Gang Culture, Wokeness Fuel Murder

Liz Wheeler argues that the headlines miss the deeper story behind the killing of Austin Metcalf by Karmelo Anthony, saying the mainstream narrative focuses on race while ignoring cultural rot and failed ideas that shape young men’s choices. She pins blame not just on individual choices but on a broader cultural and ideological environment she sees as fueling violence and moral breakdown.

Many on the left insist this case is primarily about race, and the media have leaned into that frame hard. Wheeler pushes back, insisting the obvious facts of violent behavior and cultural influence are being glossed over in favor of a politically convenient story. That refusal to look at root causes, she says, means we keep missing opportunities to actually prevent tragedies like this one.

Wheeler goes straight at cultural explanations. “There’s a reason the mainstream media doesn’t want you to know the truth, the reality, and the facts. Because if you know what actually happened, you are much less likely to fall for the lies that they’re telling you,” Wheeler says, explaining that what the left refuses to discuss is the element of “black culture” involved in the case. Pointing at music, fame, and gang influence, she suggests these forces matter as much as any headline about race.

“What I’m talking about is gang culture and rap culture that has infiltrated and broken black families — a culture that glorifies violence, that dehumanizes people. Young men, young black men specifically, who are raised in broken black families, who don’t have male role models, who instead look to these celebrities, whether it’s gang members for community or rap culture for their idols — they are not being molded from young men into actual men,” she says. That argument shifts attention to parenting, role models, and community accountability instead of national guilt-trips.

Wheeler then ties the cultural problem to political ideas she rejects. “And nobody wants to say this. It’s unpopular. It’s uncomfortable. You’ll be accused of saying racially charged things,” she explains, “But it’s true. The murder of Austin Metcalf by Karmelo Anthony is also an indictment on wokeness. An indictment of ‘The 1619 Project,’ which told us that America is racist. It’s an indictment on critical race theory.” That is a sharp claim: she sees these movements as teaching resentment rather than responsibility.

She singles out the rhetoric that, in her view, creates a lens of grievance. “Every politician, every corporation, every celebrity, every leftist influencer, every teacher, every liberal white woman who spews, ‘White privilege,’ and, ‘America is inherently racist,’” she continues, “seeds and feeds this anger and forms this lens through which Karmelo Anthony sees the world.” That accusation suggests cultural narratives matter because they shape how young people interpret every confrontation.

Wheeler also stresses the personal responsibility angle. “It’s not a normal reaction to grab a knife and stab the other person to death,” Wheeler says. “That’s not normal human behavior. The behavior of Karmelo Anthony in the tent, even before he got the knife out of his backpack and stabbed Austin Metcalf to death, that behavior is deliberate.” Her point is blunt: ideology can explain some attitudes, but it does not absolve choices that end lives.

If you want more commentary in the same vein, Wheeler’s show focuses on cultural critique, personal accountability, and skepticism toward narratives that, in her view, excuse bad behavior. Conservatives who worry about family breakdown, the glamorization of violence, and the influence of modern progressive thought will find this take familiar and urgent.
