The New York Knicks are in a tough spot after losing both opening games at home in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers. It’s a hole no team has ever climbed out of in NBA history. Friday night’s 114-109 loss at Madison Square Garden has left them trailing 2-0 in the series.

Pascal Siakam was on fire, scoring a playoff career-high of 39 points for the Pacers. “We have a long way to go and it’s only going to get tougher for us,” Siakam commented, highlighting the challenge ahead. Siakam was accurate all night, making 15 out of 23 shots, while Myles Turner and Tyrese Haliburton added to the score with 16 and 14 points respectively.

Jalen Brunson did his best for the Knicks, scoring 36 points and dishing out 11 assists. Despite their defense improving after a dramatic 138-135 overtime loss in Game 1, the Knicks struggled to find their rhythm offensively. Coach Tom Thibodeau remarked, “Going into the fourth quarter it’s a tie ballgame. We’ve just got to make better plays, more winning plays.”

Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in with 20 points each, but Towns was limited to 28 minutes of play. Thibodeau opted for Mitchell Robinson, who is known for his defensive prowess and managed nine rebounds. The game was tied at 81 after three quarters, but the Pacers surged ahead with a 13-4 run, led by Siakam’s impressive shooting.

Josh Hart made the game interesting with a late basket, bringing the Knicks within one point at 110-109. However, the Pacers kept their cool, with Aaron Nesmith and Turner sealing the win from the free-throw line. The atmosphere at Madison Square Garden was intense, reflecting the long-standing rivalry between these two teams.

The Knicks and Pacers have battled each other in the postseason 50 times, with Indiana holding a 28-22 edge since their first meeting in 1993. The game had echoes of their fierce 1990s matchups, though it was the Pacers who managed to pull ahead in the end. The Knicks had moments of brilliance but fell short when it mattered most.

Indiana jumped to an early 19-9 lead, but the Knicks quickly clawed back thanks to Robinson and McBride’s efforts. The game saw back-and-forth action, staying within single digits for the majority of the night. Despite the Knicks’ efforts to mount a comeback, they couldn’t overcome the Pacers’ strong start to the fourth quarter.

The Pacers’ coach, Rick Carlisle, praised his team’s resilience, especially Siakam’s performance, stating, “Special game. In the first half, he was the guy that got us going and got us through some difficult stretches.” Now, with this lead, the Pacers are looking to carry their momentum forward.

The Knicks are left searching for answers as they head into a crucial Game 3, needing to make significant adjustments to turn the series around. As the series moves on, both teams will look to bring their best to the court, knowing what’s at stake.
