Jordan Walker Earns More From Home Run Derby Than Cardinals Salary

Jordan Walker turned a big night in Philadelphia into something even bigger, cashing in on a Home Run Derby win that paid more than his entire 2026 Cardinals salary. The St. Louis outfielder caught fire when it mattered most, outlasting Kyle Schwarber and walking away with a prize that instantly changed the math on his season.

Walker’s finish was the kind of late surge fans remember. He launched homers on his final six swings, flipped the event in dramatic fashion, and locked up the $1 million top prize at Citizens Bank Park.

That payday dwarfed what he is set to make from St. Louis this year, where his salary sits at $799,400. The Derby offered a total purse of $2.5 million, with Schwarber taking home $500,000 and the other six competitors each receiving $150,000.

The crowd in Philadelphia leaned hard toward Schwarber, who was the hometown favorite, and Walker got plenty of boos along the way. Still, he seemed to understand the energy in the building and did not let the noise rattle him.

“My thought was, ‘Philly is brutal,’” Walker said. “I mean, honestly. But I think it’s pretty special because they love their players and that’s what you want from your home … I can’t hate them, because that’s their guy.”

It has been a long road back to this kind of spotlight. Walker arrived in the majors as one of the game’s more exciting young talents, and his rookie year showed exactly why, with a .276 average, 16 home runs, and 51 RBI in 117 games.

Then came the stretch that tested him. He hit just .201 in 2024 and followed that with a .215 mark in 2025, numbers that made it fair to wonder whether the early promise was starting to fade.

This season, though, he has snapped back in a big way. Through 93 games, Walker is hitting .294 with 22 homers, and his 74 RBI lead all of Major League Baseball.

For the Cardinals, that production has mattered just as much as the Derby fireworks. The 6-foot-6 right fielder has helped lift a young club that has played well above expectations and stayed firmly in the mix in the NL Central.

St. Louis sits at 50-45 and remains in the thick of the Wild Card chase, which gives every swing from Walker a little more weight. When a player this young starts combining power, patience, and confidence, the whole lineup starts to feel different.

His season has also earned him a spot in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, where he will suit up for the National League against the American League at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. For a player who has already packed so much into one week, the stage only keeps getting bigger.
