Hantavirus Outbreak Strikes Atlantic Cruise Ship, Kills Three

An outbreak of hantavirus on an Atlantic cruise ship left at least three dead and several suspected cases, triggering a World Health Organization probe and fresh questions about how a rodent-borne illness could spread in tight quarters. Experts point to rodent droppings as the usual source but say shipboard conditions, cleaning, ventilation and recent South American stops complicate the picture and raise guarded warnings about rare human-to-human risk. Authorities and scientists stress that while the public risk remains low, the situation demands careful investigation and sensible precautions.

The outbreak has been deadly for some aboard the vessel, and officials are still piecing together how passengers and crew were exposed. Hantavirus lives in rodent saliva, urine and feces and can become airborne when those materials are disturbed, putting anyone in the area at risk of inhaling infectious particles. Ship life — tight cabins, shared ventilation and frequent cleaning — can amplify risks that are normally limited to specific, dusty environments.

“It most often gets into the air when the rodent nest is disturbed, such as when being cleaned up. It is then inhaled into the lungs,” Horn told Fox News Digital. She added that while breathing in contaminated particles is the usual route, person-to-person transfer is considered very unlikely for most hantavirus strains. Still, the unusual setting of a cruise ship means investigators cannot dismiss less common scenarios yet.

Officials and researchers have not ruled out several possible transmission routes beyond direct rodent contact. It is “technically possible” that contaminated material could be aerosolized by a ventilation system, creating exposure in areas people assume are safe. “This is very low risk, but possible. It is also possible that they were exposed off of the ship,” Horn added, noting multiple plausible explanations while urging calm.

Dr. Jacob Glanville flagged the specific concern that some hantavirus strains found in the Americas have demonstrated limited human-to-human spread. “It’s possible, either because there are infected mice on the ship and people are being infected from those mice, or because of human-to-human contact transmission, which the Andes strain has been previously demonstrated to be capable of,” he told Fox News Digital. He also noted the ship’s itinerary included South American ports, which matters for linking strains to known geographic patterns.

Glanville warned against a hasty mass evacuation until investigators know whether a more transmissible strain is involved. “Otherwise, there is a small but high-consequence risk of creating a lethal international outbreak,” he warned. At the same time, he emphasized that historically hantavirus has been “far less transmissible” than respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, and that “Unless that changes with a new mutant strain, the risk remains very low to the public.”

Medical analysts and physicians agree the wider public should not panic, but they also underline the seriousness of severe hantavirus cases. Dr. Marc Siegel echoed the consensus that most spread involves rodents and that person-to-person cases are rare. He reiterated that people should “not be very concerned,” while supporting targeted public health measures for those directly exposed.

Uncertainty about the strain remains a driving concern. Glanville said it is still unclear whether the cluster came from human-to-human transmission – “although given a potential Andes strain origin, that is a risk.” He added, “Even if it’s an Andes strain, historically transmission human-to-human is inefficient,” he told Fox News Digital. “However, it is always possible that a novel mutant can arise that is able to propagate more easily between humans.”

The clinical picture of hantavirus begins with nonspecific flu-like symptoms and can escalate rapidly in severe cases. “Hantavirus can be 30% to 50% lethal, has a long silent incubation period of one to six weeks, and has the potential for droplet transmission,” he warned. Horn described the typical progression: “From there, it can progress to having trouble breathing, needing oxygen and requiring hospitalization,” she told Fox News Digital. “Some people can have gastrointestinal issues as well, such as vomiting and diarrhea.”

In critical infections the virus can damage multiple organs and require advanced respiratory support. “It can affect the heart, lungs and kidneys, causing all of them not to work appropriately,” Horn told Fox News Digital. “Infected people can have trouble maintaining their oxygen levels to the point of needing to be on a ventilator or to get external oxygenation support.” Given the potential severity, early recognition and prompt medical care for symptomatic passengers is crucial.

Public health advice focuses on limiting contact with rodents and contaminated materials and using sensible protections when cleaning suspect areas. Experts recommend avoiding dusty, enclosed spaces with signs of infestation, not disturbing nests or droppings, and wearing a filtered mask during cleanup. Basic hygiene like handwashing and surface disinfection remains practical, low-cost protection for travelers and crews while investigators finish their work.
