Hair Loss Linked to Ozempic & Other Semaglutides: Key Facts

Semaglutide medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have become quite popular lately, mainly due to their effectiveness in managing diabetes and aiding in weight loss. However, alongside the positive outcomes, some negative side effects have also surfaced. A recent study from the University of British Columbia has linked GLP-1 agonists, a group of drugs that includes semaglutides, with an increased risk of hair loss.

Researchers examined data from a health claims database of 16 million patients, focusing on 1,926 semaglutide users and 1,348 users of another weight-loss drug, bupropion-naltrexone. Upon adjusting for various factors, they discovered that semaglutide users had a 50% higher likelihood of experiencing hair loss compared to the other group. Women, in particular, seemed more susceptible, facing twice the risk compared to men.

Dr. Mahyar Etminan, a co-study author, wasn’t surprised by these findings. He pointed out that there had been anecdotal reports and clinical trials hinting at the same issue. Dr. Patrick Davis, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon specializing in hair restoration, echoed this sentiment, noting that hair growth and loss are influenced by diet, essential vitamins, stress, and genetics.

The study also highlighted a connection between rapid weight loss and hair thinning, with those shedding more than 20% of their body weight experiencing higher rates of hair loss. Dr. Davis emphasized that the physiological stress from swift weight loss could be a contributing factor. However, he reassured that long-term hair loss might be unlikely, as stress levels usually stabilize once individuals reach their desired weight.

Although the study provided valuable insights, it had limitations. For instance, it couldn’t verify hair loss through medical records, only identifying it via medical codes. Dr. Davis referenced another study where Wegovy users faced a slightly higher hair loss risk than those on a placebo, though the rate was still low.

This early research, not yet peer-reviewed, calls for further studies to explore the link between semaglutide and hair loss. Dr. Etminan advised those experiencing hair thinning while on these medications to consult a dermatologist. Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic and Wegovy, confirmed that hair loss is a recognized risk and is listed in the product information.

Dr. Davis encouraged patients to have candid discussions with their doctors about potential side effects. He stressed the importance of a balanced diet rich in fiber and protein to help combat hair loss and prevent muscle mass reduction. Novo Nordisk assured that they prioritize patient safety and work closely with authorities to monitor the safety of their products.

The study was backed by internal research funds from the University of British Columbia’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. For more health-related articles, you can check out Fox News Digital’s health section.
