The debate over immigration enforcement has been turned into a political weapon after two fatal federal shootings in Minneapolis, with Democrats pushing to cut ICE funding while downplaying the public-safety cost. Democrats are framing recent tragedies as reasons to constrain ICE, but this is a policy choice dressed up as compassion. From a Republican perspective, the issue is straightforward: stopping deportations means more dangerous people remain at large. That has measurable, predictable effects on crime and community safety.
If deportations were halted for an influx sometimes estimated at as many as 20 million illegal entrants, basic arithmetic and crime rates predict more Americans will be harmed. The question is not abstract; it is how many additional victims will result from policy decisions made in Washington. Those numbers translate into real families and real grief.
Researchers use large administrative data sets to estimate crime rates among undocumented populations, then scale those rates to different population scenarios. The data from border and border-adjacent states offer the clearest picture because of large sample sizes and consistent reporting. While methods differ, the direction of the results is consistent: more people here illegally equals more crimes in absolute terms.
One analysis of Texas data produces homicide rates for undocumented populations of roughly 2.2 per 100,000, while another correction of the same data raises that to about 3.9 per 100,000 in an illustrative year. Apply those rates to 20 million people and the arithmetic is grim: between roughly 440 and 780 additional murders. That is not an abstraction; it is a projection based on observed rates.
Those future victims would join the list of past Americans who already paid the ultimate price. Names include Laken Riley, killed after an alleged sexual assault attempt; Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old strangled in Houston; Rachel Morin, attacked and killed while on a trail; and Kayla Hamilton, a young woman with autism who was allegedly raped and murdered. Each case reminds us that statistics represent human lives.
Homicide is only part of the picture. A National Institute of Justice–funded study using Texas arrest records reported felony arrest rates per 100,000 undocumented people of about 11.3 for sexual assault, 77.8 for assault, 18.2 for burglary, and 136.0 for felony drug offenses. Scale those numbers to 20 million people and the increases are large: thousands more sexual assaults, tens of thousands more violent assaults, and many thousands more drug-related felony offenses.
The left tries to neutralize this math by pointing to studies showing illegal entrants sometimes have lower per-capita crime rates than citizens. That comparison misses the point. When millions more people arrive, even a lower rate per person produces a higher absolute number of crimes, and that is what communities feel in their streets and homes.
Worse still, recent migration patterns likely make older data less reliable as a guide to current risk. Some source countries reportedly relaxed prisons or otherwise exported violent offenders during recent border breakdowns, so the composition of new arrivals may include a higher share of dangerous individuals than earlier waves did. That raises the stakes for enforcement decisions today.
The coalition pushing to slash ICE funding includes Democratic lawmakers who see political advantage, corporate interests seeking cheap labor, and media outlets that often minimize enforcement consequences. Add cartel networks that profit from porous borders and you have a policy mix that favors chaos over order. This is a political choice, not an inevitable outcome.
Because “defund ICE” doesn’t just mean fewer deportations; it means more empty chairs at dinner tables, more funerals, and more lives shattered. It also means lost jobs and communities that feel less safe, and those are consequences voters will remember when policy makers treat safety as a bargaining chip.
