Congress Spends $7 Trillion, Here’s Where Your Money Goes

Washington’s spending habits look very different when the numbers are stripped down to something ordinary people can feel in their bones. Instead of getting lost in trillions, the real story comes into focus fast: where the money goes, how much is borrowed, and why the interest bill is turning into a monster all its own.

You work, you earn, and Washington reaches into the pile. That simple reality gets blurry when the totals start flying around in the trillions, so it helps to shrink the whole thing down to a single $100 bill and see how the budget actually breaks apart.

In fiscal year 2025, the federal government spent roughly $7 trillion. Social Security took about $1.6 trillion, major health programs like Medicare and Medicaid swallowed another huge chunk, and defense landed near $900 billion.

Then comes the part that should make taxpayers sit up straight. The government spent about $970 billion on net interest alone, money that went not to roads, schools, or benefits, but to servicing old borrowing. That works out to roughly $14 of every $100 spent just disappearing into interest.

Picture a household that brings in $100 and burns $14 because of old credit card debt. Nobody would call that healthy budgeting. Yet in Washington, that kind of math is treated like routine business.

Once the big categories are laid out, the rest of the budget looks like a crowded table with too many plates. The balance goes to veterans’ benefits, income-security programs, transportation, education, federal agencies, and a long list of other obligations that pile up year after year.

That is where the conversation gets uncomfortable, because the federal government did not actually have the money it spent. Revenue in 2025 came in around $5.2 trillion, which left a gap of roughly $1.8 trillion when spending hit $7 trillion.

Put another way, for every $100 Washington spent, it collected only about $74 and borrowed the other $26. That is not a tiny mismatch or a temporary hiccup. It is a pattern that keeps rolling forward, with next year’s bill stacked on top of this year’s.

There is no magic trick hiding behind the curtain, just the same old habit of promising more than the books can support. Politicians love talking about the programs they will protect and the new ones they want to launch, but they get a lot quieter when the topic turns to who pays and when.

The national debt makes the problem even harder to ignore. The Congressional Budget Office projects net interest costs could top $1 trillion in 2026 and climb to about $2.1 trillion annually by 2036 under current law.

That is not a small line item. It is money that will go out the door before Congress buys a single bridge, missile, or benefit check with it, and it means less room for every other priority taxpayers hear about on the campaign trail.

This is why the whole thing feels less like a partisan fight and more like a basic math test Washington keeps trying to skip. The country keeps arguing over taxes, spending, and who deserves what, but the deeper issue is whether the government is spending money it does not have and expecting tomorrow’s taxpayers to cover the difference.

That is the receipt missing from the whole arrangement. Americans can already see the result in the borrowing, the interest, and the growing pressure on future budgets, and the next question is the one nobody in power seems eager to answer out loud: what happened to the last $100?

Stop Spending what you do not have and did not contribute to.

Elected Politicians can’t stop giving to those who contribute to their reelections and unelected bureaucrats cant stop giving what they have no authority to give.

Until WE THE PEOPLE say no more an throw the bums, I said Bums, out it will not change.

The voting public complains they don’t have enough. Why do you continue to vote people in office who have never run a functioning business? Not a Podunk looser, a profitable business.

You get what you vote for, a looser like Mamdani will promise the world, Free Everything, while taking everything you own and enslaving your children.

History and the world are full of give away artists, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Z dong, Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Augusto Pinochet, Idi Amin Dada, and more, all offering FREE, TAKE FORM THE RICH. When in office they take everything form everybody, the rich and poor, while killing millions to preserve their positions.
