Chicago has suffered waves of violence before, but the frequency and scale of these weekends demand more than condolences and press conferences. Voters deserve tangible plans that reduce shootings and bring swift consequences for repeat violent offenders. The city can no longer hide behind study groups and vague promises while people bury loved ones.
Behind every number is a family trying to understand why someone they loved is gone or scarred for life, and neighborhoods where businesses shutter and street life retreats. Those losses erode trust in government at every level, and that trust is not easily rebuilt. When law-abiding residents feel like second-class citizens in their own city, the social contract frays.

The narrative from progressive city halls has been that policing reform and investment in social services are a binary choice, but commonsense governance rejects that framing. You can be tough on violent crime while investing in prevention and rehabilitation for nonviolent offenders. Leadership means balancing short-term public safety with long-term strategies that remove the roots of criminality.
Immediate action is required: convene a public safety summit, request federal help on gun interdiction, and implement a transparent plan with clear metrics for reducing shootings within 90 days. If city leaders fail to produce results, accountability at the ballot box becomes the necessary remedy. Chicagoans deserve leaders who deliver safety and stability, not excuses.
