California Pumpkin Patch E Coli Outbreak Puts 3 In ICU

Health officials are investigating a string of E. coli infections tied to a California pumpkin patch, with three children in intensive care and five confirmed cases so far. The situation has drawn extra concern because the possible exposure window lines up with the final stretch before Halloween, when families were still visiting the farm and moving through packed fall festivities.

The outbreak has been linked to Brookshire Farms in San Luis Obispo, according to county health authorities, who say the suspected exposure period ran from Oct. 16 through Oct. 26. The farm closed voluntarily while investigators try to pin down the source, sort out whether the cases are connected, and figure out if more people may be at risk.

Officials are urging anyone who visited the pumpkin patch during that stretch to stay alert for gastrointestinal symptoms. That warning matters because E. coli often shows up after a delay, with illness typically starting three to 10 days after exposure, which can make the connection harder to spot right away.

Symptoms can hit hard and fast once they begin. Cramping, severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and dehydration are among the biggest red flags, and doctors say young children are especially vulnerable because their bodies can deteriorate quickly when fluid loss starts to build.

County Health Officer Dr. Christy Mulkerin said investigators are moving quickly to identify the source and protect the community. She also urged anyone with symptoms consistent with E. coli infection to seek immediate medical attention, a reminder that waiting this one out can be a risky move, especially for small kids.

Medical experts say the concern is not just the stomach bug itself, but what can happen next. In children under 10, E. coli can sometimes lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that damages blood cells and can progress to kidney failure if the illness turns severe.

Infectious disease physician Dr. Tyler Evans said diarrhea is one of the main things to watch, along with the fatigue that often follows dehydration. He also stressed that younger children and older adults tend to be more fragile when foodborne illness starts spreading, with children under 5 needing especially close observation.

Evans explained that E. coli can spread when bacteria from feces make their way into someone’s mouth. That can happen through contaminated food or water, animal contact, or even person-to-person transmission, which is why crowded outdoor attractions can become a problem when hygiene slips.

Not every strain of E. coli causes serious illness, but the confirmed infections in this case involve Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, the more dangerous kind. That distinction matters because this strain is the one linked to the harsher symptoms and the complications that health officials worry about most.

Prevention still comes back to the basics, and handwashing sits at the top of the list. After touching animals, handling food, or spending time in shared spaces with children, a quick scrub can make a real difference, especially when bacteria may be moving quietly through a community before anyone realizes something is wrong.

The timing has also made the story more tense for families heading into Halloween weekend, when pumpkin patches are usually packed with kids, snacks, hayrides, and constant hand-to-mouth contact. In a setting like that, one hidden contamination problem can spread anxiety fast, and parents are left watching for symptoms long after the outing is over.

Brookshire Farms has not publicly commented beyond saying it is waiting on county test results. For now, investigators are still working through the details, and health officials are treating the outbreak as an active concern while the answer behind those sickened children remains unsettled.
