New research is putting a familiar habit back in the spotlight: getting more bright light during the day. The big idea is simple, but it matters a lot, because stronger daylight exposure may help people fall asleep earlier, wake up earlier, and sleep more deeply once night rolls around.
The study, led by researchers at the University of Manchester, tracked more than 500 days of data from 89 adults who wore light sensors, sleep trackers, and kept daily sleep diaries. The results pointed to a pretty clear pattern, adults with brighter and more consistent daytime light exposure tended to have healthier sleep-wake cycles overall.
People who got more daylight during the day were more likely to drift off earlier and rise earlier too. They also spent more time in deep sleep during the first part of the night, which is the kind of sleep that leaves you feeling more restored and less like a zombie by breakfast.
Sleep expert Jennifer Martin said the findings line up with what researchers already know about how light steers the body’s internal clock. “Light impacts human sleep through a specific pathway, starting with the eye,” Martin, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital.
“When light hits specific cells in the retina, it communicates to the brain that it’s daytime, meaning we should be alert and active.”
That signal matters more than most people realize. Morning light helps set the tone for the whole day by telling the body when to be awake and, later on, when it should start winding down.
Martin said that getting sunlight early in the day is especially useful because it helps keep the sleep-wake cycle steady. She recommends spending time outdoors in the morning whenever possible, even if it’s just for a short stretch before the day gets busy.
“Exposure to sunlight early in the day is really good for healthy sleep,” she said. “Regular morning light helps people feel sleepy around the same time each evening and build a strong sleep routine.”
There is also a flip side, and it is just as important. Bright light late in the evening can push the body in the wrong direction, making it harder to settle down and stick to a reliable bedtime.
Martin said people should try to avoid bright light during the last couple of hours before bed and keep their wake-up time fairly consistent from day to day. “Varying your wake time by more than about one hour can lead to feelings of ‘jet lag’ and contribute to trouble with regularly sleeping well,” she said.
That advice is easy to underestimate, but a steady schedule can make a real difference. The body likes rhythm, and when that rhythm gets thrown off by late nights, bright screens, or wildly different wake times, sleep often gets messy fast.
She also said adults should aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night and consider seeing a sleep specialist if problems keep showing up. Good sleep is not just about how long you stay in bed, but also about how well your daily light exposure supports the whole cycle.
Still, the researchers were careful not to overstate the findings. The study showed an association between brighter daytime light and better sleep patterns, but it did not prove that one directly caused the other.
There were other limits too. Light exposure was measured with wrist-worn devices rather than at the eyes, where light has its strongest effect on the body clock, and the study did not fully account for things like physical activity or meal timing that can also influence sleep. Even with those caveats, the takeaway is hard to ignore: a little more daylight during the day may help set up a calmer, more natural night.
