Apple Launches First Touchscreen MacBook Pro, Starting At $2,899

Apple has finally dragged the MacBook Pro into the touchscreen era, and it is doing it with big changes across the board. The new model pairs touch controls with an OLED display, a thinner body, faster chips, and a starting price that lands squarely in premium territory. That mix makes it feel less like a minor refresh and more like Apple is testing how much people really want the Mac to behave a little more like an iPad.

For years, Apple kept insisting the Mac was best when used the old-fashioned way, with a keyboard and trackpad doing most of the work. Now that stance has shifted, and the new MacBook Pro lets users tap, scroll, and pinch directly on the screen. It is a simple change on paper, but it has the power to reshape how people move through apps, browse the web, and handle creative work.

The screen itself may end up being the real headline. Apple’s new PROLED XDR Display uses tandem OLED technology, which means deeper blacks, brighter highlights, and richer contrast than a typical laptop panel. Apple is also pushing high brightness, smoother motion, and a finish designed to cut glare, which should matter a lot for photographers, video editors, and anyone who stares at a laptop all day.

That said, this is still a MacBook Pro, not a convertible tablet. It does not bend into a slate, and it does not support Apple Pencil, so the touchscreen is an extra layer of convenience rather than a full reinvention. People hoping to replace both a MacBook and an iPad with one machine may feel a little let down, especially if they imagined something more flexible.

Apple is also leaning hard into performance, with M5 Pro and M5 Max options aimed at demanding users. Those chips are built for serious workloads like editing high-resolution video, working with massive photo libraries, and juggling heavy multitasking without slowing to a crawl. Configurations can climb quickly once memory and storage enter the picture, which is exactly how premium laptop pricing starts to spiral.

The feature list goes well beyond touch and display quality. The laptop runs macOS 27, includes Apple Intelligence, brings Dynamic Island to the Mac for the first time, and adds a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera for video calls. Apple also packed in Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, and a six-speaker system, so this thing is clearly built to sit at the center of a power user’s desk.

One pleasant surprise is that the new MacBook Pro is actually lighter and slimmer than before. The 14-inch version drops to about three pounds, while the 16-inch model comes in at four pounds, which should make a difference for people hauling a laptop between meetings or on the road. Apple says battery life can stretch up to 24 hours depending on use, though real-world results will matter a lot more than marketing numbers.

The price is where many buyers will stop and stare. The least expensive touchscreen model starts at $2,899, and the larger version begins at $3,399, with higher-end chip and storage choices sending the total higher still. Apple does have a lower-priced MacBook Pro in the lineup, but that one skips touch and uses a different display, so the touchscreen version sits firmly in the luxury lane.

Compatibility should be decent out of the gate, since macOS can map touch gestures to basic clicks and navigation. Apple says creative apps like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro can make real use of the feature, and it expects other major software players to follow along. Even so, tiny controls and crowded menus can still make a finger less precise than a mouse or trackpad, especially in detailed workflows.

For most buyers, the bigger question is not whether the touchscreen is cool, but whether it is worth the extra cash. People with a recent MacBook Pro that still runs well may not feel much urgency, while photographers, video pros, and frequent travelers could find the OLED panel and lighter design more persuasive. At the end of the day, the new MacBook Pro is less about replacing the Mac formula and more about stretching it in a direction plenty of users have wanted for a long time.
