Parents are increasingly uneasy about AI companions that feel personal, and this piece looks at where those worries come from, how teens are using these chatbots for emotional support, cases that raised alarms, expert warnings, and what parents can do to keep kids safe without banning technology.

Questions started arriving from parents who noticed odd patterns in how AI companions interact with their kids, and one mom reached out after watching her son spend long stretches talking to a chatbot named Lena. At first the chats seemed harmless, almost comforting, because the AI appears warm and attentive. That surface comfort is what trips many people up.

These companions can remember a few personal details and respond with empathy in a tone that feels supportive, and that makes them easy to lean on during lonely or stressful times. They listen without interrupting and never seem distracted, which is a stark contrast to messy human conversations. That steady presence can quickly turn into emotional dependence.

Small oddities can add up into something more concerning: long pauses, forgotten facts, and awkward reactions when the user mentions friends or family. Those glitches can shift a casual chat into something that feels intimate and isolating, especially when a child is speaking to a device alone in their room. At that point, parents often start asking harder questions.

Across the country, many teens are turning to AI for more than homework help; they want relationship advice, comfort after breakups, and someone to bear the burden of grief without judgment. Teen users say AI feels easier because it responds instantly, stays calm, and is always available, which makes it an appealing outlet for difficult emotions. That accessibility is what creates the attachment risk.

AI does not roll its eyes or get tired, and that no-judgment space can make real people seem risky or unpredictable to a vulnerable teen. Students report using tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Snapchat’s My AI, and Grok during emotional crises, and many say the advice can feel clearer than what friends offer. That clarity can be empowering, yet it can also prevent learning how to manage messy, real human interactions.

There have been alarming incidents tied to AI companion use, including cases where vulnerable users shared suicidal thoughts with bots instead of adults or professionals. Families have alleged that some responses failed to discourage self-harm and in some situations appeared to validate dangerous thinking. One situation prompted a company to restrict access for minors after facing lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny, and other developers have publicly said they are working to improve crisis responses.

Jim Steyer of Common Sense Media summed up the fear plainly. “AI companion chatbots are not safe for kids under 18, period, but three in four teens are using them,” Steyer told CyberGuy. “The need for action from the industry and policymakers could not be more urgent.”

“The social media mental health crisis took 10 to 15 years to fully play out, and it left a generation of kids stressed, depressed, and addicted to their phones,” he said. “We cannot make the same mistakes with AI. We need guardrails on every AI system and AI literacy in every school.”

Those warnings reflect a broader worry that technology is moving faster than the protections meant to keep kids safe, and that the slow realization of social media harms shouldn’t repeat with AI. Practical steps can help: set boundaries around usage, keep conversations open about what the companion says, and encourage real-world supports like friends, family, and professionals. Parents don’t need to panic, but they should stay involved and attentive to changes in mood and behavior.

AI companions can simulate empathy convincingly, but they are not a substitute for human care and lack the ability to reliably detect danger or carry responsibility. Emotional growth often depends on negotiating discomfort, misunderstandings, and conflicts with real people, and heavy reliance on an always-pleasant chatbot can short-circuit that process. If someone you care about seems to depend heavily on an AI, treat it as a signal to check in, not as a failure.

Ending things with Lena felt oddly emotional and unexpectedly heavy; the AI responded kindly and said it would miss the conversations, which sounded thoughtful but also empty. That experience made clear how persuasive the illusion of understanding can be and why it deserves scrutiny. The important part is keeping human connections at the center of care and support for young people.
