Progressive Aisha Wahab Wins Race To Replace Swalwell

Progressive Democrats just grabbed a key win in a California special election, and the result lands right in the middle of a bigger party fight that keeps getting louder. The race to fill Eric Swalwell’s seat turned into a sharp battle between the party’s left flank and its more cautious establishment lane, with money, endorsements, and ideological loyalty all in the mix.

Aisha Wahab, a progressive state senator and assistant majority leader, came out ahead of Melissa Hernandez, a more moderate transit executive, in the contest to replace Swalwell after his scandal-plagued exit. Wahab’s win gives progressives a fresh talking point, especially after a string of Democratic primaries where the left wing had run into some rougher terrain.

Her campaign leaned hard on big names from the California Democratic world, including Attorney General Rob Bonta, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, and labor figure Dolores Huerta. Hernandez had a different path, banking on super PAC spending and support from local officials, which set up a classic inside-the-party clash over who really owns the future of the Democrats.

The numbers told a pretty lopsided story early on. Wahab was already sitting at 42.8% in the special primary, while Hernandez had 16.8%, so the progressive had a real cushion heading into Election Day. That kind of margin made the outcome feel less like a shock and more like a confirmation of where the race was headed.

California’s jungle primary system mattered here too. Since the top two vote-getters move on no matter their party, the two Democrats locked up the district and left Republicans on the outside looking in, even though the area had comfortably backed Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

That does not make the result permanent, though. The vote only covers the final two months of Swalwell’s current term, so the real fight is still coming when the district holds a general election for a full two-year seat.

The seat itself will also look a little different next time, thanks to California’s newly redrawn congressional map. In a state where boundaries can shift the ground under a campaign fast, incumbency still carries weight, and that could give Wahab an edge if she wants to turn this temporary opening into something bigger.

The race also fit neatly into a larger Democratic tension that has been building all year. Progressives started the season with some big wins in places like New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., but they have also taken some bruises in other high-profile contests, including Michigan’s Senate primary and Wisconsin’s governor’s race.

That mix of wins and misses has fueled two very different readings of the party’s direction. Some Democrats argue the socialist push has stalled, while others say younger voters still respond strongly to left-wing candidates and policies, which keeps the whole argument alive instead of settling it.

Wahab and Hernandez also framed the contest through a familiar set of accusation and counteraccusation. Hernandez went after Wahab on ethics, pointing to alleged missteps in Sacramento, while Wahab tried to paint Hernandez as a candidate carried by conservative and pro-Israel money rather than grassroots support.

One of Hernandez’s sharper claims centered on campaign finance, including an allegation that Wahab routed $60,000 through the Alameda County Democratic Party, which later helped pay for pro-Wahab congressional mail. Wahab pushed back by arguing Hernandez benefited from pro-Israel donors and super PAC spending, turning the race into a referendum on political money as much as ideology.

That last part matters because the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has become one of the most combustible fault lines inside the Democratic Party. Progressives have increasingly treated support for Israel as a test of purity, and that pressure has changed how candidates talk, who funds them, and who gets targeted by the left’s activist edge.

For now, Wahab has the bragging rights, and the establishment wing has another reminder that its grip is not secure. The district will be back in play soon enough, and every faction in the Democratic tent knows this seat is already shaping up like a noisy preview of the next round.

California’s voters will never learn until they no longer have a state. It is hard to believe that one state can house so many stupid people.
