Terry McLaurin showed up at the Washington Commanders training camp on Sunday after a brief holdout. Despite his presence, there’s still no agreement on new contract terms for the 2024 second-team All-Pro. The Commanders have taken McLaurin off the reserve/did not report list and placed him on the active/physically unable to perform list due to an ankle injury he dealt with last season, as mentioned by head coach Dan Quinn.
“I’m really pumped that he is here,” Quinn expressed before Sunday’s practice, having had a direct conversation with McLaurin the day prior. “He is such an awesome competitor. At his core, that’s who he is,” the coach added. McLaurin skipped reporting to camp on Tuesday, resulting in a hefty $50,000 fine for each of the four days he missed. The seasoned player is in the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million extension he signed back in 2022.
The PUP list status means McLaurin can’t take part in on-field drills, although he’s allowed to be with the team during meetings and is counted in the 90-player roster limit. With fans watching practice, McLaurin will focus on working with the training staff on a side field, as Quinn explained. Earlier this year, McLaurin did participate in the initial phases of Washington’s offseason program but chose to sit out the on-field segments of OTAs and the mandatory minicamp.
His teammates have been supportive during his absence. Quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was instrumental alongside McLaurin in Washington’s unexpected journey to the NFC Championship game last season, commented on the situation. “Just business in the NFL,” said Daniels. “We know Terry’s working … at the end of the day, he’s still one of our brothers.”
