Why More Cars Use 8-Speed Automatics Now

Eight-speed automatics have quietly become one of the biggest names in modern drivetrains. They show up everywhere because they balance quick acceleration, relaxed cruising, and strong fuel economy without making the car feel sluggish or overly busy.

The idea behind the eight-speed automatic is simple enough: give the engine more usable gear choices so it can stay in its comfort zone more often. That helps with efficiency at highway speeds and keeps launches and passing power sharp when the driver asks for more.

The first real breakthrough came in 2007 with Aisin’s AA80E in the Lexus LS460, but the transmission most people think of today is the ZF 8HP family. It arrived in BMW’s flagship 7 Series in 2010 and quickly earned a reputation for doing a lot in a very small package. It was lighter than the six-speed it replaced, fit in the same space, and gave automakers a cleaner path to better performance and efficiency.

That mix made the ZF unit an easy sell. Luxury brands wanted smoother shifts, sports-car makers wanted faster responses, and mainstream automakers wanted a transmission that could improve mpg without turning the driving experience dull. Once the early adopters proved it worked, the rollout spread fast.

Today, the list of vehicles using some version of the ZF 8HP is long and surprisingly varied. It includes BMW models, the Toyota Supra, Jaguars, Land Rovers, the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the Chrysler 300, and the Dodge Charger. Chrysler has also built the transmission under license for years, which helped it appear in a wide range of Stellantis products, including some V8-powered models.

Torque capacity is another reason this transmission keeps showing up in so many places. Different versions of the ZF 8HP can handle anywhere from 221 lb.-ft. to 737 lb.-ft., which is a huge range for one gearbox family. That flexibility lets it work in everything from refined luxury sedans to muscle cars with serious output.

What drivers usually notice first is how smooth and fast it feels. The ZF 8HP uses three clutches, four gearsets, and two brakes to create its eight ratios, and it can skip gears when the control logic decides that makes sense. In normal driving, that means fewer awkward shifts and less hunting between gears, especially when traffic gets messy or speed changes quickly.

It is also built for longitudinal layouts, so it works with engines mounted to send power to the rear wheels or all four wheels. That makes it a natural fit for sporty sedans, performance coupes, and performance SUVs alike. In race-oriented or paddle-shift setups, drivers get a little more control without giving up the easy manners that make an automatic appealing in the first place.

That said, the ZF 8HP is not magical. Its valve body is complex, and issues can pop up with pressure regulator valves, priming valves, end plugs, or worn solenoids. The mechatronic system and transmission control module also live in a hot environment, so heat management and fluid care matter more than many owners realize.

When maintenance slips, repair jobs can get expensive fast. Torque converters, bushings, and clutch packs can also become trouble spots, and those fixes are not always simple or cheap. Even so, the transmission has built a strong reputation because, when it is healthy, it delivers the kind of polished driving feel that keeps automakers coming back for more.
