The F-16 has been around long enough to earn a reputation, but a fresh combat milestone in Ukraine just gave the jet a louder voice. A Ukrainian F-16 brought down a Russian Su-35 in July 2026, marking the first air-to-air kill for the aircraft in the conflict and adding a new chapter to the fighter’s long service record. That moment also put a spotlight back on what this aging but heavily upgraded jet can still do when it’s put to work in a real war.
For all the talk about the F-16 being a veteran design from the late 1970s, it still carries plenty of punch. The aircraft has been modernized over the years, and in the air it remains a fast, flexible platform built for fights that demand quick reactions and sharp targeting. Age does matter in combat aviation, but so does training, weapons, and how the jet is used, and the recent kill showed that the F-16 can still surprise people who write it off too soon.
The July engagement was especially notable because the target was a Su-35, another 4th-generation fighter and a serious opponent. Russian media reported that the Su-35 was hit, and the pilot survived, though the full details of the pilot’s condition were not immediately clear. Even without every last detail, the significance is hard to miss: this was not a drone or missile intercept, but a straight-up fighter-versus-fighter win.
That matters because Ukraine had already been using its F-16s in ways that proved useful but less dramatic. Since receiving the jets in August 2024, Ukrainian pilots have used them against Russian missiles and drones, helping strengthen air defenses around threatened cities. This newest kill suggests the aircraft is now being pushed into a broader role, one that goes beyond shielding ground targets and into active air combat.
Ukraine’s first F-16s arrived much later than originally hoped, and the fleet has not had an easy path since then. At least three have reportedly been lost, and the total number in Ukrainian service is believed to be around 39. Even so, the aircraft have stayed relevant because they address one of Ukraine’s biggest needs, which is keeping Russian aircraft, missiles, and drones from roaming freely overhead.
Weapons supply has been a major limiter, and that has mattered just as much as the jets themselves. A fighter like the F-16 is only as useful as the missiles and support systems feeding it, and for a time that shortage kept the aircraft from doing everything it could. Conditions have likely improved since March 2025, which helps explain why the jet is now showing up in more aggressive and visible missions.
More aircraft are on the way, too. Belgium is in the process of transferring seven F-16s in 2026, and that is only part of a larger plan that could bring a total of 53 jets to Ukraine by 2029. Every addition strengthens Ukraine’s layered air defense and gives commanders more options when Russia sends another wave of aircraft, missiles, or drones toward the front or toward cities far from it.
Yurii Ihnat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, told Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) in July 2026 that Ukraine’s F-16s have downed around 2,200 Russian drones and missiles out of 3,000 intercepted attacks. That kind of record helps explain why the aircraft has become so important so quickly, even before this air-to-air victory. The latest success also sends a clear signal that the F-16 is not just hanging on in a support role, but is still capable of changing the tempo when the fight turns hot in the sky.
