I’ll lay out why the Senate filibuster is back in the spotlight, the risks and rewards of scrapping it, how Democrats have behaved on this issue, the strategic advantage of moving first, and why a GOP-led push to go nuclear makes sense during a shutdown. This piece argues from a Republican perspective that the stakes are high and bold choices are on the table.
The filibuster debate always circles back when one party controls the White House and both chambers of Congress. For conservatives, it is a bitter paradox: the rule protects the minority, yet it can also strangle any meaningful action when dysfunction rules. With the government shut down, patience runs thin and voters want action over procedural purity.
This is called the nuclear option for a reason. Eliminating the 60-vote threshold would hand a unified majority the power to move quickly on policy, for better or worse. The risk is obvious: give one party unchecked power and you invite rapid, sweeping change when the other side wins.
Still, consider the alternative. Democrats have made clear their willingness to rip up long-standing norms when it suits them, and the last time reform was on the table, only a small number held out. If Democrats are going to blow up the filibuster at their first opportunity, the strategic calculus changes.
Republicans should weigh not only what could be lost but what might be gained by acting first. Going first forces opponents into a defensive posture; they must undo what was done rather than simply drive their own agenda. In politics, initiative matters, and playing offense can reshape the terrain.
There are concrete areas where a GOP majority could use that latitude to deliver tangible wins: tax relief that stays in voters’ pockets, enforceable border reforms that restore control and fairness, and energy policies that unleash American producers. These are not abstract priorities; they are the kind of measures that can win broad public support if framed as restoring normalcy and growth.
Yet the danger remains real. If Republicans erase the filibuster, Democrats will do the same in turn and pursue sweeping changes that many Americans oppose. Court packing, statehood for D.C. and Puerto Rico, and radical social policies are the versions of that danger most often raised, and they are not fanciful hypotheticals.
But politics is also a game of probabilities. The last time the filibuster was openly on the chopping block, a handful of Democrats resisted—Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin—figures who have since shifted or left the political scene. Today, even Senators who once balked are signaling flexibility when the stakes are this high.
The filibuster once worked because cross-party coalitions existed: moderate Democrats and centrist Republicans often found common ground. That landscape has eroded into tribal standoffs where compromise is rare. When institutions ossify, the temptation to break them grows, and voters can be sympathetic when gridlock shutters government services.
There is also a practical truth: policy tends to stick. Major programs survive shifts in power because once people adapt to benefits, repealing them becomes politically costly. If Republicans act now and deliver popular wins, dismantling those changes later would be harder for Democrats who return to power.
Some conservatives and liberals argue that gridlock is a blessing, a brake against overreach. That argument has merit because it forces restraint and prevents bad laws from being rammed through. But gridlock also leaves voters without solutions and erodes trust in institutions meant to serve them.
Right now, with the shutdown costing real hardship and the federal machine stalled, Americans may be willing to gamble on institutional change if it means getting things done. Donald Trump ran on shaking up the status quo, and his supporters expect bold moves, not endless procedures that lead nowhere.
There is wisdom in caution, and the decision should not be made lightly. Still, if the alternative is permanent gridlock or surrendering the initiative to an opponent who will not hesitate to use the same tools, Republicans have a defensible case for going first. The question is whether they will take that chance and deliver results while they can.

I just read an article today too about your Governor Greg Abbott and his plan to slap a 100% Tariff on any of those dumb ass voters that flee that hellish mess if they’re thinking they can plop down in Texas when the carnage gets very real in NYC, Dear Lord it’s going to get ugly! And I immediately said to myself, way to go Governor Abbott! Sure there are so many dazed lost liberals and Gen Z’s falling for the lies or propaganda, but also this proves there are still too many crooked elections (rigged) in many locales around the nation; I mean case in point look at Commifornia with Newscum! Hopefully and I think it should be possible, that this clown act Mamdani has an Achilles Heal and the whole plan comes crashing down on him FAST and FURIOUS!

And in the UK its been Conquered.! that they’re now in charge of the UK.
