Trump Orders Nuclear Tests, Strengthens American Deterrence

President Donald Trump pushed back hard on critics after ordering a restart of U.S. nuclear testing, arguing America cannot be the only major power sitting out while rivals modernize their arsenals. He framed the move as a straightforward step to verify our deterrent and keep pace with adversaries, saying testing is about assurance and safety, not brinkmanship. The conversation sparked a heated back-and-forth on national TV where Trump insisted the United States must act like every other power that tests and modernizes its forces.

Trump announced the order to resume tests on his social feed just before a summit with China’s president, a timing that grabbed headlines and set off fierce debate. He told CBS’s Norah O’Donnell he didn’t want America to be the only country not testing its weapons, pointing to adversaries that are expanding and improving their capabilities. The central message was simple: deterrence requires confidence in your stockpile, and testing helps deliver that confidence.

When asked to explain the necessity, Trump offered a blunt and practical view about oversight and performance. “Well, we have more nuclear weapons than any other country. I think we should do something about denuclearization and I did actually discuss that with both President Putin and President Xi. We have enough nuclear weapons to blow up the world 150 times. Russia has a lot of nuclear weapons and China will have a lot; they have some, they have quite a bit,” Trump said. He used blunt numbers to stress the scale and remind listeners why verification matters.

Shortly after his order, a Russian test of a nuclear-capable underwater torpedo made headlines and fed Trump’s argument about asymmetric transparency. The Russian demonstration highlighted new delivery technologies and the kinds of capabilities that change strategic calculations when left unchallenged. That moment underscored the administration’s reasoning: if rivals test and iterate, the United States needs to confirm its own systems perform as intended.

Pressed again about testing necessity, Trump kept the focus on empirical proof and parity. “Well, because you have to see how they work, you know, you do have to. The reason I’m saying ‘testing’ is because Russia announced that they were going to be doing a test. If you notice — North Korea is testing constantly, other countries are testing — we’re the only country that doesn’t test. And I want to be. I don’t want to be the only country that doesn’t test,” Trump responded. That line makes the point for voters who put national strength front and center.

The interview also turned to media scrutiny and perceived double standards about reporting on adversary programs. Trump pushed back against journalists who, he argued, treat U.S. openness as a weakness while failing to report what rivals quietly pursue. “Russia’s testing and China’s testing, but they don’t talk about it. You know, we’re a [sic] open society,” Trump pushed back. “We’re different, we talk about it. We have to talk about it because otherwise you people are gonna report they don’t have reporters who are gonna be writing about it. We do.”

Experts have been warning for years about adversary nuclear expansion, and the administration used those assessments to justify moving on testing. The Pentagon’s evaluations of foreign stockpiles and modernizations have been a steady drumbeat, and policymakers argue the U.S. must maintain credible, demonstrable deterrence. For supporters of the decision, confirming weapons performance is a sober extension of responsibility rather than an aggressive provocation.

Critics raised concerns about treaties and diplomatic fallout, but the administration framed its choice as responsible stewardship of the nation’s deterrent. The goal, as presented, is to sustain a safe, reliable force that reassures allies and deters enemies without inviting unnecessary risk. In short, the argument is that a strong, tested arsenal preserves peace by making aggression unthinkable.
