Colorado Teacher Fears Targeting After Shirt Complaint, Says She’s Afraid

Stacy Adair, a Colorado teacher with a reputation for speaking her mind, says a simple shirt has turned into a stressful mess. After wearing an “XX ≠ XY” t-shirt to a professional training session, she was questioned by her district and told to avoid clothing with controversial messaging, a move that left her worried about what comes next.

Adair says the complaint came out of nowhere. No one raised an issue at the event, and she insists many people would not even recognize the shirt as political at first glance.

To her, the message was straightforward and rooted in biology, not a stunt. That is part of why the response hit so hard, since she views the shirt as more of a factual statement than a provocation.

After the training, she says the district handed her a questionnaire and pressed her on why she wore it. The warning about future apparel made the whole thing feel less like a one-off and more like a line being drawn.

That concern has echoes beyond one classroom or one district. Ryan Walters, who leads the Teachers Freedom Alliance, sees the situation as another sign that teachers who don’t fit the preferred ideological mold can end up under the microscope.

Walters argues that schools have become battlegrounds where viewpoint matters as much as performance. In his view, cases like Adair’s are not strange exceptions but part of a wider pattern that keeps repeating in different places.

Adair’s story also ties back to her past clashes with union power in her district. She says she helped push out board members backed by the union in 2021, and after that the district allowed its union contract to expire instead of renewing it.

She describes the old arrangement as one that put too much control in the hands of the union and too little in the hands of the elected board. Decisions about pay and school policy, she says, were filtered through union influence instead of being driven by local leadership.

That fight, according to Adair, brought consequences of its own. She says she later received a threatening email after speaking out at a school meeting, enough to prompt a police report and leave her feeling exposed.

Even now, she says she cannot prove the anonymous complaint about the shirt came from union allies. Still, she says the timing and the past pressure make it hard not to wonder whether old grudges are feeding the new scrutiny.

Adair also says she has never treated her wardrobe as some kind of activist costume. She wears “word” shirts often, including a “Math facts” shirt she once wore while meeting Education Secretary Linda McMahon, and she says the clothing usually reflects ideas she thinks are simply true.

The district’s policy against political or disruptive clothing gives the dispute another layer. Adair says the shirt was worn at a staff event with no students present, which makes the backlash feel even more detached from common sense.

What troubles her most is the feeling that this won’t be the last time she is singled out. For Adair, the shirt complaint is not just about fabric or wording, but about whether teachers in public schools can still say what they believe without stepping into danger.
