President-elect Donald Trump has announced Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister as his nominee to lead the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The nomination, revealed on Saturday, underscores Trump’s commitment to prioritizing law enforcement and border security as key pillars of his upcoming administration.
“For over 32 years, Sheriff Chad Chronister has served the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and received countless commendations and awards for keeping his community SAFE,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, praising Chronister’s decades of service in law enforcement.
Chad Chronister has built a distinguished career in law enforcement, serving in the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since 1992. Appointed sheriff in 2017 by then-Governor Rick Scott, he has been re-elected twice, earning widespread recognition for his leadership.
Chronister’s résumé includes graduation from the FBI National Academy’s 260th Session and numerous leadership roles:
- Co-Chairman of the Regional Domestic Security Task Force for Tampa Bay
- Council Member of the Florida Attorney General’s Statewide Council on Human Trafficking
- Chairman of the Criminal Justice Sub-Committee
- Vice-Chairman of the Hillsborough County Public Safety Coordinating Council
Under his leadership, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized community engagement, public safety, and combatting organized crime. Chronister’s work on domestic security and human trafficking issues has solidified his reputation as a no-nonsense law enforcement official.
Trump highlighted the key objectives for Chronister’s tenure, emphasizing collaboration with Pam Bondi, Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, to combat the nation’s drug crisis. Bondi, a former Florida Attorney General, is expected to work closely with Chronister on key initiatives, including:
- Securing the Southern Border: Strengthening efforts to prevent illegal crossings and halt the flow of drugs into the U.S.
- Stopping Fentanyl Trafficking: Addressing the deadly fentanyl crisis, which continues to claim thousands of lives annually.
- Saving Lives: Expanding initiatives to combat drug abuse and addiction.
“Chad will work with our great Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to secure the Border, stop the flow of Fentanyl and other Illegal Drugs across the Southern Border, and SAVE LIVES,” Trump stated in his announcement.
The president-elect also congratulated Chronister’s family, saying, “Congratulations to Chad, his wife Nikki, and two wonderful sons!”
Chronister expressed his appreciation for the nomination in a statement posted to social media, calling it “the honor of a lifetime.”
“I am deeply humbled by this opportunity to serve our nation,” Chronister said, pledging to use his decades of experience to tackle drug trafficking and abuse on a national scale.
If confirmed, Chronister will assume leadership of the DEA at a critical juncture. The agency faces mounting challenges, including a surge in fentanyl-related deaths and the proliferation of illegal drug trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border.
Chronister’s nomination reflects Trump’s commitment to making border security and drug enforcement central to his administration’s priorities. The announcement came shortly before Trump named Kash Patel as his pick to replace Christopher Wray as FBI Director, signaling a broader reshuffle of key law enforcement positions.
Both moves are consistent with Trump’s “law-and-order” campaign promises, aimed at addressing what he describes as the Biden administration’s failures in border security and drug enforcement.
If confirmed by the Senate, Chronister will face a daunting task. The U.S. is grappling with a worsening drug crisis, with fentanyl now the leading cause of overdose deaths. The DEA has struggled to combat sophisticated trafficking networks that smuggle drugs into the U.S. through both legal and illegal ports of entry.
Additionally, Chronister’s leadership will be crucial in addressing the rise of organized crime linked to drug distribution, both domestically and internationally. His track record in law enforcement and focus on community safety are expected to be assets in this role.
The nomination has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters applaud Chronister’s experience and Trump’s commitment to prioritizing border security. “This is exactly what we need,” one commentator wrote on social media, praising the sheriff’s tough-on-crime approach.
Critics, however, question whether Chronister’s local law enforcement background fully prepares him to lead a federal agency with the DEA’s scope and complexity.
Chronister’s nomination marks a decisive step in Trump’s broader strategy to reframe America’s approach to drug enforcement and border security. With decades of law enforcement experience and a commitment to public safety, Chronister appears poised to bring a fresh perspective to the DEA’s leadership.
Whether he can deliver on Trump’s ambitious objectives remains to be seen, but his appointment underscores the administration’s focus on addressing the nation’s pressing drug crisis and securing the southern border.

“The agency faces mounting challenges, including a surge in fentanyl-related deaths and the proliferation of illegal drug trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border.” Ya thunk? Why? Called ‘hamstrung,’ ‘fighting with one hand tied behind your back,’ by the most corrupt administration, inarguably, in American history! Dozens of these faux “leaders” should be prosecuted and JAILED for, at a minimum, misfeasance in office. As John Stossel would say, “GIVE ME A BREAK.”
Bad choice. I lived there and my sister worked for him in the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Dept. and he has Zero regard for the behind the scenes folks. This guy locked up a Pastor for opening his church during COVID. If you wanted a Sheriff that would do the job, Polk County Florida’s Grady Judd is your man.
“Hard A$$es don’t arrest Pastors for having church services during covid or release violent criminals from prison into society just to reduce the possibility of covid spread in prisons. Neither Spreely or Trump’s people looked into this guy closely enough.
