Trump Appoints Voight, Gibson, and Stallone as Special Envoys for Hollywood

In a dramatic move to reshape the American entertainment industry, President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone as special envoys to spearhead the revival of Hollywood. Announced Thursday via a Truth Social post, Trump declared his vision to “Make Hollywood Great Again” by addressing the industry’s struggles and reversing its steady decline over recent years.

“It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California,” Trump wrote. “They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to foreign countries, BACK — BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!”

The trio of entertainment veterans, each boasting iconic careers spanning decades, has been tasked with advising Trump on measures to restore Hollywood’s prominence. The president-elect described them as his “eyes and ears on the ground” and vowed to act on their recommendations to return Hollywood to its former glory.

“It will again be, like The United States of America itself, the Golden Age of Hollywood,” Trump declared.

The three appointees represent a mix of Hollywood prestige and personal ties to Trump:

  • Jon Voight, an Academy Award-winning actor, has been an outspoken Trump supporter, frequently voicing his admiration for the president-elect on social media.
  • Mel Gibson, known for both his acting and directing accomplishments, recently visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago and shares a reputation for taking bold stances in the entertainment industry.
  • Sylvester Stallone, the iconic star of Rocky and Rambo, also visited Trump following his election victory and has long been a symbol of resilience in Hollywood.

The appointments underscore Trump’s intent to leverage star power in addressing the challenges plaguing the entertainment capital of the world.

The entertainment industry has faced significant setbacks in recent years. A combination of rising production costs, declining advertising revenue, and economic uncertainty has driven major studios to cut back on projects. Southern California, once the epicenter of global filmmaking, has seen a sharp decline in production as studios shift operations overseas to capitalize on lower costs and lucrative financial incentives.

The Biden administration’s handling of the economy has exacerbated Hollywood’s struggles, according to Trump. Economic pessimism, combined with inflation and skyrocketing consumer prices, has led to shrinking advertising revenue and widespread layoffs across the industry.

In 2023, The Walt Disney Company announced 7,000 job cuts under CEO Bob Iger, a trend that continued throughout 2024. Meanwhile, post-production jobs, including visual effects work, are increasingly outsourced to international vendors, further depleting the local job market.

Adding to the woes, China, once a critical revenue stream for Hollywood, has imposed strict restrictions on the release of American movies in its theaters, cutting off billions in potential earnings.

Trump’s announcement signals a comprehensive effort to address these challenges. By appointing figures like Voight, Gibson, and Stallone, Trump aims to combine their firsthand industry experience with his administration’s policies to reverse the industry’s decline.

His vision includes incentivizing domestic production, strengthening local job creation, and combating the outsourcing of labor. Trump also highlighted the need to reclaim Hollywood’s cultural influence, emphasizing a return to traditional values and storytelling.

“Hollywood has lost its way, but under my leadership, we’ll bring it back to where it belongs,” Trump said.

As with many of Trump’s initiatives, the appointments have sparked mixed reactions. Supporters praise the move as a bold step toward revitalizing an industry in crisis, applauding the selection of seasoned veterans to lead the charge.

Critics, however, argue that the appointments are largely symbolic and question whether Trump’s plans address the root causes of Hollywood’s decline. Skeptics also point to Gibson’s and Stallone’s controversial histories, suggesting that their involvement may overshadow the initiative’s goals.

Despite the criticism, Trump’s supporters remain optimistic about the potential impact of his appointees. “This is the leadership Hollywood needs,” one fan wrote on social media. “These are people who know the business and understand what made Hollywood great in the first place.”

The success of Trump’s Hollywood revival plan hinges on collaboration between the industry and policymakers. The appointments of Voight, Gibson, and Stallone reflect a strategic effort to blend star power with policy initiatives aimed at addressing Hollywood’s challenges.

While the road ahead remains uncertain, Trump’s announcement has already sparked conversations about the future of the entertainment industry. As the trio begins their roles as special envoys, all eyes are on Hollywood to see if a new golden age is truly within reach.

Whether the plan succeeds or falters, one thing is clear: Trump’s influence on Hollywood is set to make waves long after he takes office.
