Suspect in ATV Attack Struggled with Gender Identity and Mental Health

Last July, a small city in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula became the backdrop for a bizarre and tragic series of events.

A young man on an ATV wreaked havoc in Hancock, slashing tire valves, smashing car windows, and even targeting an elderly man over political yard signs supporting Donald Trump. The incidents left residents shaken and searching for answers.

Carl Nelson, 81, and his brother Paul, 78, were outside Paul’s home in Hancock on July 21 when their lives were upended.

According to Carl, a man dressed in black sped down the street on an ATV, grabbing Trump signs from yards and throwing them into a swamp. When Carl restored the signs, the ATV driver returned, veered off the road, and struck him from behind.

“He kind of ran me down,” Carl told Blaze News. The impact knocked him unconscious and caused a brain bleed, as well as severe bruising and abrasions. He was rushed to the hospital, while stunned neighbors recalled the chaos.

Walter LaPlante, a resident across the street, described the incident as a “politically motivated attack,” adding, “It was shocking to see something like this in our quiet community.”

Police quickly identified the suspect as 22-year-old Joshua Kemppainen of Hancock. The day after the attack, Kemppainen turned himself in but was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Evidence collected from his residence confirmed his involvement.

Kemppainen’s background painted a troubling picture. According to his father, Joshua had been bullied in high school, diagnosed with autism, and struggled with depression. A friend, Lane Campbell, revealed that Joshua also wrestled with gender identity issues and had experimented with estrogen.

“He wanted to be viewed more as a woman,” Campbell said, though he noted that Joshua’s gender journey was complicated and not tied to a specific identity.

Campbell, who described their friendship as intimate, shared that Joshua’s mental health had deteriorated in the months leading up to the attack. Joshua had expressed frustration with his conservative community, feeling unable to express his femininity, and voiced anti-government sentiments, particularly against law enforcement.

The attack and its aftermath left the Hancock community grappling with complex emotions. Carl Nelson, now recovering, bears no ill will toward Joshua’s family. “They obviously didn’t have any control over him,” he said, declining offers to sue.

For Campbell, Joshua’s actions were a cry for help. “He genuinely cared but was misunderstood,” he said, advocating for greater societal connection to combat isolation and mental health struggles.

While Carl has healed physically, the emotional toll lingers. Just days after the attack, his brother Paul succumbed to cancer, leaving Carl to reflect on the fleeting nature of life. “It’s something we lived through and survived,” he said.

The Hancock ATV attack serves as a sobering reminder of how mental health, identity struggles, and political polarization can intertwine with tragic consequences. The community’s hope now lies in healing and preventing similar incidents in the future.
