Virginia just flipped its switch and the state is already moving fast toward policies that will make life harder for law-abiding residents. Governor Abigail Spanberger wasted no time undoing cooperation between state law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, and a Democratic legislature is pushing bills that hit public safety, pocketbooks, and time-honored institutions. This piece walks through the most alarming shifts and why concerned Virginians should be paying attention right now.
Spanberger’s first big move was to erase an order that let state police and the Department of Corrections coordinate with federal immigration agents. That coordination targeted noncitizens who had also committed crimes, and removing it makes it tougher to remove dangerous people from the streets. When a new governor’s first act weakens law enforcement tools, it tells you where priorities lie.
The broader picture is even more concerning because Democrats now control both houses of the legislature. They are advancing measures that were not part of any mainstream campaign pitch, and some of those measures would cut mandatory minimums for serious offenses. Passing laws that reduce penalties for crimes like rape and manslaughter is a radical departure from the promise of protecting communities and supporting victims.
One piece of proposed legislation would ease minimum sentences for offenses including child pornography, a change that defies common sense and public safety. Voters who supported candidates for their law-and-order credentials have a right to be surprised and angry. Campaign claims of moderation mean little when governing choices swing hard to the left.
On the budget front Democrats are flirting with a range of new taxes that contradict the affordability message voters were sold. Ideas on the table include expanding sales taxes to services and taxing deliveries from online retailers and food apps. Add in a plan to rejoin the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and you get higher energy bills layered on top of broader tax increases.
There’s also a bill that would bar immigration enforcement near polling places, a change framed as protecting voters yet raising questions about its real intent. If enforcement teams ever felt the need to operate near polling sites it would suggest real concerns about illegal voting activity. Legislating blanks instead of addressing root problems only invites more confusion and potential abuse.
The Virginia Military Institute is another flashpoint where partisan priorities are colliding with tradition and merit. A proposal to create a task force to evaluate continued state funding and to reshape the board sends a chilling message to institutions that have produced leaders and fighters for the nation. These moves look less like careful oversight and more like a political test designed to reshape a long-standing American institution.
The governor appointed former Governor Ralph Northam, whose past scandal remains widely known, to a VMI oversight role while removing Garrett Exner without a public hearing. Exner quoted Senator Scott Surovell saying, there are “genuine concerns about the qualifications, backgrounds, and intentions,” of Youngkin appointees. Exner pointed out: “Mr. Surovell is not a veteran. He has never deployed. He has never prepared young men and women for service to the nation. I’ve dedicated my life to serving this country and helping the next generation of leaders succeed. I would like to know what part of my background Mr. Surovell finds, ‘concerning.’”
Exner warned that VMI is “the latest target of Democrats’ assault on America’s institutions. The school, with its strict honor code and devotion to merit, stands in direct opposition to the new ideals of the Democrat party — socialism and equity.” Those are vivid words, and they reflect a broader worry that ideological tests will displace qualifications and service. When politics becomes the filter for leadership at institutions like VMI, the results are rarely good for the institution or the country.
All of this adds up to a rapid policy reset in Richmond that many voters did not anticipate. The choices being made right now—on public safety, taxes, and institutional control—will have real consequences for families and communities across the state. Virginians who care about security, fiscal sanity, and merit-based institutions should be watching, speaking up, and organizing before these measures become entrenched policy.
